Lou's Record Store — where does the name come from, and what's the shop about?

Lou is a cat. He currently runs our complaint department. Originally, he wanted to clean and price inventory; sadly, that position only lasted one day.

You're in Brunswick, down on the Georgia coast by the Golden Isles. What role does the shop play locally, and who's coming through?

Currently, we are assisting the Golden Isles Music Archive in tracking down vintage recordings by local artists.

What are you deepest in — the genres and formats people come to you for?

I am pretty wide open. I listen to a lot of Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd, but there is a lot of R&B, blues, and classic rock in my collection.

What's the first tell that a box of records is going to be a good one?

When I see clean covers, generally the vinyl will be in good condition too.

What walks in constantly that people think is gold but really isn't?

Elvis!

What's the unglamorous record that always finds a buyer?

Anything by “Neil Diamond.”

If it were your own records, would you tell someone to take the cash or the credit?

Store credit; the customer gets a better deal.

Coastal Georgia means heat, humidity, and salt air. What condition damage do you see most, and what would you tell a seller?

Water-damaged album covers, black mold on vinyl and warped records. We have several record cleaning machines and a Recordpi so we can save a lot. When a customer calls, we always state if the records are scratched, we are not interested, but they bring them anyway. People are under the assumption that all vinyl is valuable.

What's the wildest thing a seller has walked in with, not knowing what they had?

A Lynyrd Skynyrd CD signed by the entire band. He apologized about the condition because there was writing all over the insert.

What's the one record from your own collection you'd never sell?

The Rolling Stones "Miss You" 12" on pink vinyl. The B-side is "Faraway Eyes" one of the best country songs ever recorded!

We do not give prices until we actually see the items. Condition and titles greatly affect the sales prices. We pay cash or store credit, or a combination of both if the seller is interested.

What can you tell me about your vinyl selection?

We sell mostly used vinyl, classic rock, R&B, blues, jazz, and country but do have several boxes of pop. We get used vinyl in every week and do have several local artists in stock from time to time.
