Stardust Alley Vinyl Records

Record store in Harwich, MA

Stardust Alley Vinyl Records has already shifted once since the original question set was sent, and that update says something useful on its own: the shop is active, adaptive, and tied closely to the larger antique setting around it. The answers below also give a clear picture of what moves on Cape Cod, what sellers usually choose, and what condition issues show up most often in local collections.

Interview

Stardust Alley lives inside the Harwich Antique Center on Cape Cod. How does being part of an antique center shape the shop?

No - Stardust Alley has moved to Barnacle Betty's Antique & Art Emporium 109 Route 28 West Dennis, MA 02670. 508-258-0101. It is great being part of another shop as this brings business to me and I bring business to the other dealers.

You take all genres except classical, with a real interest in rock, pop, hip-hop, rap, jazz, children's music, and oddities. What's the appeal of the unusual finds for you?

Actually, I do classical too. I find I get people with different tastes. Of course, rock is the best seller, but I do ok with all the other stuff too.

You offer a bit more value for trade-ins than cash. Do most sellers go the trade route?

most sellers sell outright.

You price by condition, issue, and popularity. What makes a record an easy yes when it comes in?

artist and condition

Cape Cod pulls year-round locals and summer visitors. Do they browse differently?

Yes - I find the summer people have more money to spend and will go for the higher priced albums more than than in the winter.

Salt air and seasonal humidity are rough on records. What condition issues do you see most in Cape collections?

Mold is an issue.

What's a find or a customer story that captures the shop?

My favorite customer is a young lady with downs syndrome. Whenever she comes in, she brightens the shop with her sweet personality.

I've had celebrities come in, lots of musicians come in because they know they can find items they won't find anywhere else.

First visit to Stardust Alley - what should someone dig through first?

Whatever genre they are in to. I also have a "New Stock" section that is popular. I bring new records in every Thursday.

Seller notes

Sellers can bring records in for either a sale or a trade. Trade-ins generally get a little more value than cash offers, and pricing depends mostly on the artist, condition, issue, and popularity of the records.
