Customers rave that every artist is tabbed out and the shop shows real attention to detail. How much does that care in organizing the bins matter to you?

It matters a great deal. We pride ourselves on making it easy for customers to find what they are looking. It is in our DNA and it really seperates us from most other stores.

The two owners get singled out for knowing their stock cold and recommending new artists based on what someone's flipping through. How do you approach that kind of guidance?

We are music geeks ourselves and we love all kinds of music. We want to help customers both get what they are looking for and to be able to explore down the rabbit holes that their choices lead them. Having a past in retail, distribution and record labels helps me combine everything to together.....trying to be the best at retail and sharing our knowledge of music and being able to source both new and used records that our customers are looking for or are suprised to find.

People also mention you'll talk sleeves and record care with them. How much of the job is helping people look after their collections?

Records can be expensive and we want to help our customers take care of their investment so that the records they buy last a lifetime. From showing those new to vinyl how to properly care for them to carrying top end products for our audiophile customers is key. We don't wait to be asked, we offer advice anytime we meet new customers.

Reviewers call it small but mighty — the best selection in Tulsa, maybe Oklahoma. How do you pack that range into the space?

Space restrictions are always a challenge. We make it work by curating our selection carefully and making sure our bins are not filled with, for lack of a better term, junk records. We have places where we store both extra used and new records. Other than new releases that are featured on our wall, we only put 1 copy per title in the bin. We replace with our backstock when sold. This way we can use the space for "multiple copies" for more selections. You will not find 10 copies of a Dan Fogelberg for instance in the fogelberg bin. We maximize every inch with an eye to more unique titles not just a bunch of copies of things.

What does the Tulsa crowd reach for most in the bins?

Tulsa is a unique city with a rich musical heritage. From way back in the 1920's with bob wills broadcasting out of Cains ballroom to the 60/70's Tulsa sound that was the unique belnd of blues, rock, country, and even gospel all rolled into one with such local heroes as Leon Russell, J.J. Cale, the Gap Band, and many others and through the power pop (Dwight Twilley) and punk era's up to the current scene with incredible people like Seth Lee Jones, Jesse Aycock.and others. While we always sell a lot of the Tulsa sound artists and a lot of the current local artists, we see a lot of current demand for "Red Dirt" Music (turnpike troubadours, red clay strays ect) and we also have a healthy Metal market (We have festivals like 2 minutes to Tulsa), and for various reasons Tulsa also always has a demand for R&B and Funk! In addition to the usual best sellers.

You play music in-store so it's never quiet. How does that shape the browsing experience you want?

A record store should be playing music! We play anything that strikes of fancy and our customers love the music vibe they get here. They might here a native American record, followed by a cheekface record (great band btw) to any number of current records. We have employees with wide tastes. Nothing is more satisfying than playing something new or different and having a customer ask about it or buy it!

When someone wants to sell records, what's the best way to start — and what makes a collection an easy yes?

For us we welcome sellers every day. Just bring them buy and we will take a look and more often than not, make an offer. We try and offer the fairest prices in town for used. But the best way to start is to make sure your records are in great shape. We will not buy beat up records as we pride ourselves on having quality used records. So check your records and if they look good, come see us. An easy yes? That would be a collection in good condition that has been well cared for. And has good titles that people still like or is filled with rare genres like Blues or vintage jazz. We will buy the good titles with the everyday so you can unload your whole collection. I always tell people NOT to let people cherry pick their collection. They will end up with a lot of stuff nobody wants. We will buy it ALL

First visit to Studio Records — what should someone dig through first?

Used new arrivals at the front of the store. These are the latest "hot" used titles that have come in. After that, start at the beginning, dig, listen to great music, and hang with us. We love to visit and show you things!
