Sweat Records
Record store in Miami, FL
5505 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL 33137, Miami, FL 33137
Sweat Records describes itself plainly: a record store by Miami and for Miami. The shop pairs new and used vinyl with books, zines, all-ages events, and a staff that can point visitors toward the city's music life.
Its bins reflect the city around it: global sounds, Latin and Caribbean records, Miami funk and soul, pop, rock, hip-hop, classics, and even a growing classical section.
Interview with Sweat Records
Sweat is one of those shops that's really a neighborhood institution with records in it — books, zines, events, the whole ecosystem. How do you describe what Sweat is?
We are a record store by Miami and for Miami. I was born and raised here and have worked in music retail for over 25 years so we know what our audience – the locals and the tourists – are looking for and we stock accordingly. We’re also a community space for all-ages events, and a portal to help discover cool shit going on in Miami. It’s not the easiest city to initially plug into, but once you dig a little, there’s so much going on and tons of nice people to meet.
The funk, soul, and Brazilian depth is a signature. How did those become the store's backbone, and how does Miami feed that taste?
It’s more our whole global section and is a direct reflection of our demographics. We’re the “gateway to the Americas” and a majority Latin city with all kinds of influences so it makes sense that we carry as much of that as we can. And yes we are very proud of our unique Miami Funk/Soul section as our city has a storied history of incredible music from the ‘60s, ‘70s, and beyond. It’s fantastic that new generations are discovering and appreciating it.
Miami's musical layers — Latin, Caribbean, dance, punk — all coexist. What actually moves in the bins?
The daily sales reports never cease to impress me! We truly sell a staggering variety of titles, we even expanded our new classical vinyl section lately because of customer demand. Of course we sell pop, rock, hip hop, and all the classics too, on our Best Sellers page you can see it’s everything from SZA to Soda Stereo.
The books and zines matter to the shop's identity. How do they change who walks in and what they leave with?
We just have a small rack but it’s always got some killer titles and local specialties. You can leave with anything from a history of vogueing in the NY ballroom scene or a guide to foraging Florida’s flora, or a kids book about Prince or Dolly Parton. We wish we could expand it but perhaps in the future.
What do Miami regulars hunt for versus what visitors take home?
A lot of visitors are either looking for classics/catalog titles that are hard to find or super expensive where they live, or they are record nerds like us looking for their specific grails. Some people also just follow us on Instagram or TikTok and are excited to check us out in real life during their South Florida vacations.
When someone wants to sell records, what's the best way to start — and what makes a collection an easy yes for a shop with Sweat's taste?
I always say, start with YOUR favorites. From there we are always happy to help and guide in the shop, or online you can check out our Staff Picks page to see what we’ve been digging.
What does Miami's climate do to collections that have lived here for decades?
Nearly everyone here has AC so it’s usually fine, but of course we advise to always store your records vertically, don’t put them in a hot garage or anywhere without climate control, and NEVER leave them in your car on a hot day.
First visit to Sweat — what should someone make time for beyond the bins?
Our shop is full of ephemera and memories and art from throughout the years so check all that out, and obviously we have an incredible staff so make sure to chat them up. They are full of great recommendations for music, concerts, restaurants, and anything else. Sweat Records is absolutely kind of a Miami visitors center for music people:) Lolo Reskin Sweat Records Direct: 305.342.0953
