Yesterday And Today Records has been part of Miami record hunting for more than four decades. Evan describes a shop rooted in older music knowledge, carefully graded used LPs, Latin records, and a long-running love of garage, psychedelic, and progressive sounds.

Yesterday and Today has been a Miami gem for decades - people compare it to Amoeba. How do you see the shop's place in the city?

Being we've been around over 45 years, we've built up quite a following. We're pretty knowledgeable particularly in older music and pride ourselves in the condition of the used LP's that we sell.

Owner Evan gets singled out constantly for knowledge and warmth, teaching newcomers about LPs and even 8-tracks. How do you approach welcoming people new to vinyl?

For newcomers to vinyl we explain about warmth/sound of analogue recordings, the enjoyment of tangibly holding and reading the cover's liner notes/artwork of the LP cover and the experience of listening track by track to the LP, as the way the artist/band wants one to enjoy the album.

Reviewers point to a psychedelic and garage rock specialty. How did that become the shop's calling card?

Garage, psychedelic and progressive music are our specialty. It's music I really loved, growing up in the 60's and beyond. I enjoyed turning people onto a bit more obscure music during a radio program I did for about 15 years here in South Florida on an FM station and continue to do so here in the shop.

There's a strong Latin section that regulars really know. How important is Miami's own musical mix to what you stock?

Growing up in Miami, I enjoy the Latin culture and music. We try to provide original and new recordings of all types of Latin music at the shop.

Someone mentioned an 80s new wave section they loved. What are the deep corners of the shop worth knowing about?

We do have an 80's section, and as mentioned, specialize in psych, garage and prog. You'll find all types of music ranging from the the 50's and beyond.

You carry vintage vinyl, cassettes, 8-tracks, and retro tees. What's been quietly strong lately?

We don't currently have too many 8-tracks or reels, but do get them in periodically. We've seen an increase in demand for CD's and cassettes.

When someone wants to sell records, what is the best way to start - and what makes a collection an easy yes?

When someone wants to sell us records, we explain that we currently aren't interested (although carry) classical/opera, big band/swing and easy listening. It's mostly other areas like rock, jazz, blues, funk, soul, reggae, etc...
