Interview with Bynx Orlando

James, Bynx is a serious crate-digger's shop — $1 bins, $3 records, funk and metal. How did you build that deep, affordable digging culture on E Church St?

We were fortunate to find some partners early on with great leads on collections, good mentor-type individuals who helped guide us in the right direction. We still have a couple we work with regularly, while finding other opportunities along the way.

We try to cater to both serious collectors and casuals. So our collection spans everything from the affordable, mass-produced presses to more rare, hard-to-find titles. We try to keep that ethos as we grow as a business.

Your staff are known for knowing pressing variations and rare finds — how did that expertise become part of the shop's reputation?

I think we just have been fortunate in that we have a natural passion for music, and we’ve attracted people who are similarly passionate/diverse about their own music tastes. It’s also just the nature of collecting, you’re bound to come across some rarities, in some cases people didn’t even necessarily know they had.

I had vintage salsa in mind, but you may not see that as a Bynx specialty. How would you describe the shop's real strengths in Orlando?

We actually don’t really specialize in this genre, so you may be confusing us with another record store (Bossa roll perhaps).

Orlando's scene is bigger than people outside Florida realize; who comes through Bynx, and how's the local record world?

We see all kinds of people — from newbie buyers to seasoned crate diggers. You’re right, the scene is a lot more active than people realize, and we have quite a few record stores around town to attest to that fact. I think each one offers its own specialty/vibe. Ours is definitely a curated selection and being that we’re inside a coffee shop, you see a whole different variety of people with a wide range of tastes. So while we are more dense in some areas than others, we try to have a broad enough appeal to keep people coming back.

What's the most valuable or surprising record that's turned up in your bins?

There’ve been a few. We currently have 5 records from John Lennon’s private collection (yes, you read that right). Some of my favorites have been the first mono pressing of Kind Of Blue, original Serge Gainsbourg records from France, rare NIN singles… we've had a lot of cool 7” come through too.

You mostly offer store credit and skip classical — what makes a collection a strong yes for you?

This is a tough question to answer as there are many factors that play into it, but if a collection is well-maintained, has a good variety of records or conversely has a significant niche representation, those are good signs that the person has some goodies. Still, market value does play a role in it as well.

You've got $1 bins and rare finds side by side — roughly what does a common record fetch versus something you're excited to buy?

You’re always willing to pay a bit more for more sought-after titles. There’s only so much you can offer someone for mass-produced records/later pressings/etc.

Do you buy 45s and 78s — salsa and funk both live on 45s — and is there demand?

Again not our speciality — we do buy 45s from time to time but find that 7” records move slow, and there are so many from the jukebox days, it can be a bit tougher to find valuable titles.

Your staff know pressing variations well — how can a seller tell an original pressing from a reissue before bringing it in?

Do their research! Discogs is a great resource, pretty much universally used by collectors/sellers/buyers alike. Check every small detail — the catalog #, label color/variations, sleeve material, runout groove notes, whatever you can find to properly identity a record. For less common records it’s generally easier — it gets tough with older records from bands like The Beatles, Stones, etc., who had so many versions of one album…. Sometimes people think they have gold, but its fool’s gold, and then the opposite can also be true.

What do people most often overestimate about their records — and what quietly sells better than they think?

I think people underestimate a lot of indie/non-mainstream artists’ value. A record’s value is determined by a number of factors, as we’ve discussed above, but scarcity is a huge factor. And the reality is a lot of great records only saw one or two press runs with a limited number of copies, so their value often goes up if the demand matches it. Think of all the late 90s/early 200s bands having a revival right now… their records are also seeing a hike in value.
