Rag and Bone Records has a clear editorial position — pop/rock/R&B/jazz/punk/new wave/metal on 33 1/3 albums, being genuinely selective about 45s, no 78s at all. That's a specific spine, not an everything-shop. What's the story behind that focus, and how would you describe the shop's identity?

I have 600 sqft of space so I tend to curate very carefully. We are as close to everything as one can get, minus a 78. But if you asked I’m sure I could unearth one from a dark place LOL

Hurst sits in the Mid-Cities between Dallas and Fort Worth — its own place, not really a suburb of either, real Texas character. For someone visiting the shop from either side of the metroplex, what else in Hurst or nearby is worth their afternoon?

Mid Cities has a lot of things to enjoy. Great food. Many super cool small businesses. The vibe is more laid back. No need to rush around so much, just get a lead from a local shop and we can point you in the right direction.

Between Mid-Cities locals, Dallas-side day-trippers, Fort Worth folks, and the wider DFW crowd, you catch a wide range. Who ends up as the Rag and Bone regular, and how has that shaped what you stock?

Regulars have become good friends. And friends look out for each other. So how that shapes what I stock is that I try to get to know my customers and if I see something I know they will enjoy or want, I try to make sure it gets into the right persons hands. Customer service is a big thing for me. I appreciate all my folks!

Being selective about 45s and passing on 78s entirely is a specific format position. Most shops handle those two very differently — what's your honest reason, and how do you have that conversation with a seller who shows up with a big 45s stack?

Again, limited space is a big reason. We have several small boxes of 45’s available in store. But I do have boxes and boxes of 45’s in storage so if they ask I can definitely bring them to the shop to dig. As for sellers, I am just honest and let them know we just don’t sell that many.

On covers and condition: nothing without a jacket, nothing extremely damaged. What condition problems are the automatic no, and what do you wish sellers had done before bringing records in?

Mold is an automatic no. That’s not healthy for anyone. Now, what one chooses to do on their own is entirely their decision. What I wish people would do, is not attempt to pre price without record grading knowledge based off what the internet says. Sometimes it goes way deeper than it’s just an old copy of Zeppelin II.

What quietly turns out to be worth more at Rag and Bone than sellers expect — a record they'd almost throw in the free pile that you're always glad to see?

I buy a lot of different genres and am big on buying weird records. Like educational things, kids records or just bizarre. An example, How to improve your eyesight or how to bowl a better game. Just very niche titles that make you think, giggle or are just dumbfounding. So that tends to be a shocker sometimes. The Everything Else section is my favorite in the shop.

You'll do house calls on non-store days for large collections. What tips off a house call worth making, and what do you wish sellers had ready before you arrive?

House calls are fun because you never know what you will find. And as I always say, records are heavy! So I don’t mind doing them to save someone the hassle especially if they are unable to get to the shop. The most helpful part is having them in some sort of accessible area and a chair or something to sit on is awesome.

We buy mostly 33 1/3 full albums and focus on genres like pop, rock, R&B, jazz, punk, new wave, and metal. We buy a small amount of country and soundtracks as well.

Are there any genres you do not typically deal with?

We don't deal much in classical and easy listening genres.

No, we generally do not take items without covers or those that are extremely damaged.

Do you buy 78s or 45s?

We do not buy 78s as we don't have much of a market for them. For 45s, we have to be selective due to similar market reasons.

What are your store hours?

We are open from 12 PM to 6:30 PM, Thursday through Sunday. We can also make house calls on other days if necessary.
