A college town never lets taste sit still. How does that constant turnover shape Record Swap?

While we do have to keep things "fresh" to stay alive - CU is pretty locked onto a couple different things but "midwest emo" is consistent. Especially considering that Urbana had one of the most influential midwestern emo bands of all time...American Football! Turnover wise, it's always a gamble. We rely on the second in command, Clementine, and the part timers for input on what's popping off. Everyone on staff has such different tastes in music which helps us stay well rounded.

Do students and longtime Champaign-Urbana collectors want completely different things?

Yes and no. The students tastes range but we have noticed students generally buy new items while the collectors are much more on the hunt for used or older/first pressings.

What does "swap" mean in practice — trade, cash, credit, community habit?

We are true to the swap part! We buy/trade every single day we are open. We offer cash or store credit! Sometimes it's someone freshening up their collection (out with the old and in with the new!) and sometimes it's a student who's broke and wants "going out" money. Something more common is someone selling a collection because their loved one passed away. It's very nuanced and you have to treat people with the upmost care and respect. We never know or assume a situation and just put our best foot and offer forward! We have the largest collection around due to the community! When you treat your community right and are fair the word spreads.

Do collections literally cycle with the academic year — moving out means selling out?

We have a large international base at our college so yes! When the school year starts coming to an end we do see an uptick since moving them can be a hassle!

Records that have lived in dorms and basements have stories. What condition issues come up most, and what should sellers prepare?

Condition MATTERS. We understand that grading is subjective but we've been in the business for 47ish years and training your eyes to see scratches can be tricky. Mold is a NO GO. We get a lot of beat up stuff but they just don't understand what makes a record in good condition or not. We care about the LPs condition more than anything so if the cover is a little beat up we can work with ya but if you take a record out and it looks like someone went ice skating on it there is no reason to bring it in. You never know what you're gonna find in an LP sleeve. I've found dead bugs, love letters, drug remnants, hand drawn art.

Are there local bands or labels that still matter to your bins?

AMERICAN FOOTBALL. They are consistently a top seller to us and they're under Polyvinyl which is local to us and an AMAZING label.

What genre has stayed strong in Urbana longer than anyone would expect?

Midwest emo! I've mentioned it a few times. It is STRONG here because it was born here. It takes elements of sad rock, punk, and math rock. We have such a well rounded customer base, especially with it being a college town and having people from EVERYWHERE come here! We used to be known as the punk store way back 'n the day and punk is not going anywhere either. From classics like Ramones, Fugazi, and Green Day...it's still kicking.

First dig at Record Swap — what should someone know?

Breathe....and start digging. We have SO much and you won't get to all of it in a day and that is OKAY. We seperate things by format and genre. Just have fun and feel free to ask a staff member where something is! We just want to get something you like in your hands with no judgement. Gone are the times when record store workers were mean and judgemental. We love music and community and want to create a safe place for you to discover and build up a community as well as your collection. At the end of the day you don't have to snag anything, just come and enjoy.
