Interview with Shandi's Music & More

Shandi's is in Cuba, a small Illinois town, with a big pop selection and a growing jazz shelf. How did the shop come together, Bob?

Shandi's music and More opened in Canton IL. In 1999 after I left Co-op Records which I had been with since the 80s. On November 16 2016 That store was involved in a natural gas explosion. We reopened on our farm in Cuba IL. In August of 2023.

You carry a lot beyond music — DVDs, Blu-rays, books, video games, guitars, and more. How do all those sides share the space?

We carry a wide variety of merchandise such as DVDs, Blu-rays, T-shirts. Guitars and accessories, book's, collectibles and memorabilia. We have sections for each category in the store and they all are overflowing.

Your used CD collection reportedly runs deep, even into obscure underground metal. How did that develop?

Our used CD section is bigger than most stores whole inventory. Yes we do have a large metal selection both mainstream and underground. We have many customers into that type of music so I search collections to buy so we have it on the shelves. I travel constantly to find and buy good collections for the store.

I understand all the shop's profits support animal rescue. How did that mission become part of the store?

My wife and myself love animals and have been active in the foster / rescue community for many years. The farm is full of rescue animals and I can't think of a better way to help support the animals.

What do your customers reach for most in the bins?

Cds are our biggest seller in the store but vinyl sales are on the rise. Metal, punk and alternative are our biggest sellers but we carry a big selection in Rock, pop, blues / americana, country, industrial, oldies, soundtracks etc.

You pay cash or trade for records, CDs, and the rest. What makes a collection an easy yes?

We do pay cash or store credit for collections. We love to see collections that don't just have best of or greatest. A collection with the studio albums and obscure titles is a must buy.

What's a find or a customer story that captures the shop?

We consider or customers friends. Always have great conversations and enjoy filling their want lists. We are a destination shop and are amazed at the amount of people that have came to the store. Since we have reopened we have had people from 31 states and 2 foreign countries. We have had visits from many musicians and bands passing through the area.

First visit will be overwhelming, take your time. Bring a list so you don't forget what you're looking for.
