Interview with Spiral Groove Records

What's the story behind Spiral Groove in Milford, and how would a regular describe what the shop is known for?

I built Spiral Groove out of the remnants of an older record store that I managed. I turned it into something more exciting for the community. Where we give everybody a place to spotlight their creativity whether it’s their music, art, film, fashion etc.

People tell us regularly how extensive and diverse our record selection is here. Our older regulars that come in tell us how much they love the look of our store and how it reminds them of their younger days.

You look mainly for classic rock, jazz, punk and big band names — how did those become your sweet spots, and what walks in that you're always glad to see?

Everyone that comes in has great taste! Our employees listen to our customer base intently and we grow our stock by recommendation and out of mine & the staff’s own personal taste.

I love to see original pressings specifically of old hip-hop, jazz, punk, electronic and Latin records walk through the door.

Milford's just outside Cincinnati — who comes through, and how's the southwest Ohio record scene?

A wide variety of people come in here from all walks of life and all ages. Milford is a large community and I like to think we’re a staple of that.

I think the Cincinnati scene is thriving. There are a lot of great record stores to choose from with a lot of different things to offer.

What's the most valuable or surprising record that's come through the door?

The most valuable record to ever come in is probably our copy of Signals by Rush. It’s signed by all three members of the band and lovingly framed by our friend Nancy at The Row House.

You need to see records in person to give a real number — what are you weighing in those first minutes that a seller can't guess from home?

The very first things I look for are: how long will it take me to sell and accurately grading the condition of the media/sleeve.

Roughly what does a common record fetch versus something you're genuinely excited to buy?

The normal records range from $5 to $10 a piece with some regular bigger names like The Beatles & The Rolling Stones fetching closer to $20. I’m always genuinely excited to buy vintage punk and hip hop records, which often is upwards of $100 or more.

You reach for classic rock and jazz on LP — does that taste carry over to 45s and 78s, or are the singles a different game for you?

Yes, it’s a whole different game for us. We typically don’t buy 45s unless they are a specific genre or a type of label. We don’t deal in 78s at all, our main focus is always 33 1/3 vinyl!

What do people most often get wrong about what their records are worth?

The biggest misconception on the worth behind vinyl is that the older and bigger the artist the more it’s worth when it’s usually the opposite. The bigger the name, the less it’s worth because the more in circulation there are. A perfect example is Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Street Survivors with the flames.
