Interview with Streetlight Records

Streetlight has watched San Jose change for years. What has the city's shift done to what people buy?

Silicon Valley is certainly a hotbed of technical innovation and that has impacted our business in a number of ways in our 51 years of business, 45 of them with a store in San Jose. Many people in our area are quick to adopt new technologies, including music formats. When CDs came along in the 80s, we were quick to jump on it as a viable format, as were our customers. We saw the shift happen quickly away from vinyl and cassettes. Then VHS moved to DVD, DVD to HD, HD to Blu-ray - all of which our customers embraced.

Then about 15 years ago, vinyl started its long uptick and our community reembraced it. CDs died down for a bit and are now on the upswing again. We saw these changes happen at our locations, as well, but it happened more quickly in San Jose. The other benefit of being a store that doubles as a "format hub" is that when the community sells off the old format to trade in for the new one, we get to greatly expand our used selection of the older format for those who want to hang on a little longer. It's a win/win!

Do tech workers, students, and longtime collectors browse differently - or do the bins level everyone out?

These days, everyone flocks to the vinyl bins, especially the New Arrivals. While some of the longtime collectors have their favorite go-to genres, it's mostly a big leveler.

What records feel especially tied to your Bay Area customers?

Well, my list is more bands than individual records. There were and are so many amazing bands from the Bay Area! The Grateful Dead still has a strong hold on our community, as does Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Journey, Santana, Steve Miller, Elvin Bishop, Sons of Champlain, Hot Tuna, Boz Scaggs, Green Day and It's A Beautiful Day, just to name a few.

Specific to the San Jose area are the Syndicate of Sound, The Count Five, Doobie Brothers, Dredg and Buckingham Nicks. I could go on for awhile...

Are there Bay Area labels, punk scenes, or hip-hop histories that still come through the door regularly?

Lookout! Records has had a huge impact on the Bay Area independent punk scene. It's where Green Day and Operation Ivy got their starts. Alternative Tentacles, Fat Wreck, Subterranean and 415 are also big names. Asian Man Records is another influential label from right here in San Jose. Fantasy was a huge label (Creedence Clearwater Revival and lots of jazz) that was based in Oakland. Gilman Street in Berkeley was a particularly influential club in the scene, as well.

How do you keep the store approachable while giving serious collectors real reasons to dig?

Balancing the mix of new and used records is the key to that. When we're ordering new items from our distributors and manufacturers, we're looking to fill demand on new releases and fill in the gaps for items and bands that we don't often see come in used. It takes constant adjustments and tinkering, but it's well worth it.

When someone wants to sell a collection, what should they know before bringing it in - and what comes through most, full collections or DJ libraries?

Personal collections are what we see the most of. For larger collections - say, 1000+ items - we can make a house call to assess. When customers bring their vinyl in to sell, they can be assured that we'll be able to go through it right away and make an offer on the items we're interested in.

Was there ever a buy that felt like a South Bay time capsule?

We've had quite a few over the years. More recently, we've worked with Bill Guardino, a local poster collector who has posters from the South Bay concerts going back to the early 60s. He currently has an exhibit up at History San Jose and has done several book signings with us for his recently published book called South Bay Flashback.

You gotta check out the covers of the collectible records hanging from the wires up above! We keep the records behind the counter, but it's definitely drool-inducing.
