Record store: The Vortex

We're selective, meaning we purchase records depending on titles, artists, and their condition. Since we stock a little of everything, it's best to bring all of them in, leave them with us for a few days, and let us determine which pieces we can use. You'll get a receipt from us. We'll figure out the ones we can use and the cash or trade value, then give you a call.

What days are best for bringing records in for evaluation?

The best days to bring them in are Wednesday through Sunday.

What genres are most prominently featured in your store?

We spend a bunch of time curating the titles we carry. Jazz is mostly '60s era straight ahead, but we cover some '40s and '50s. Classic rock, alternative, punk, metal, hip-hop, pop vocals, soul/funk, blues, and a small selection of local talent round out the other vinyl.

Do you carry only new releases, or do you also have used records available?

Both new and used which change rapidly since we get distributor orders and customer trade-ins almost on a daily basis.

Are there any unique finds I might look forward to during my visit?

We've got a wall display of about two dozen collectible records of various genres, but they're also scattered throughout the store in their artists' bins. Not quite crate digging, but it's fun to search and find.

Any other record stores in the area you'd recommend?

If you're also visiting Portland, try to check out Music Millennium and Jackpot Records on the East Side, along with 2nd Ave. Music downtown. Just a few of the larger stores in the PDX Metro!
