Toad Hall Books and Records has been part of Rockford since 1973, and the current owners have spent decades turning a once-chaotic diggers' dream into a huge, organized shop. Today it stretches across more than 10,000 square feet and three floors, with vinyl, books, stereo equipment, comics, and more under one old building's roof.

Interview with Toad Hall Books and Records

Toad Hall is legendary, the kind of place collectors describe as an archive as much as a store. How would you describe what's actually inside?

What started as a vintage Book and Record store has become so much more. Its grown both in size and collection. We are now over 10k sq foot over 3 floors. With more space coming in the near future. The building has history just like the stuff inside. We are in a 100 year old building that once was a pharmacy, a cafe, apartments. The 2nd floor which is all books sends you winding through old apartments on a hunt for books.

How many decades of accumulation are we talking about, and how do you organize stock at that scale?

Toad Hall started in 1973 so we are over 50 years. We (2nd owners) purchased it in 2005 and it was a mess. The previous owners' health declined and they were not able to keep up. When we got it it was best described as a dusty dingy antique shop. Roofs leaked, disorganization, Trash everywhere. The building was in bad shape as was the organization. It was a diggers dream. However it became obvious that it needed better organization or customers just plain give up.

We organize a day at a time. An area at a time. Over 20 years we have just about touched it all. But its taken decades. New stuff comes in everyday so you have to tackle that as well.

What brings people to Rockford specifically for Toad Hall: what do they hope to find that exists nowhere else?

because we have such a large shop we are able to carry a large variety of items. records that are so weird or obscure that most just flip right past it. But thats exactly what brings people in. that hidden gem. Of course we always stock the big titles as well.

we call it the core 4

We aim to excel at those 4 but of course we stock. cds, dvds, posters, Magazines.

What's the most remarkable thing that's surfaced from the stacks?

The items that we have found in the stacks have been cool historic pieces that dont have particularly big value. JUst cool little local stuff or vinage posters, or maybe some neat lp. The bigger thing is what walks in the door. Thats what would surprise you.

Do you still buy collections, and what would it take for something to genuinely surprise a shop like yours?

we still buy stuff every day. Of course we have to be a bit picky due to the amount of stuff coming in. when you get a well curated good condition collection it stands out. It could be a box of clean original jazz lps. or a box of black metal from the 2000s. Condition and depth of the genre usually makes it stand out. Otherwise I see collections with the same 70s titles nearly every day. Dont get me wrong thats ok. I can use every fleetwood mac rumours lp I can find. But its not particularly exciting.

How do you think about condition and preservation with stock this old and this deep?

It stars with buying. if its not VG+ we typically dont let it into the racks. Of course there are exceptions. I got an original lou donaldson blue note in yesterday in bad shape but its a $300 lp. In its condition its prob worth $15 . So I will keep something like that.

Come in gawk at the size. Take a lap then ask someone for what you're into. If you're into vintage country we can show you that section. Into 50s-80s soul funk. ect. We have a section for that. Whatever it is we will get you to the section you will want to dig.
