Big Love Vinyl sits a short walk from the beach on Oak Island, with carefully curated pre-loved records, new sealed titles, and an online inventory that reaches beyond the local crowd. Doug's answers connect the shop's beach-town setting with seller stories, condition, and the long personal road that led him to records.
Interview with Big Love Vinyl
Oak Island brings in locals, beach visitors, and collectors passing through. How does that mix shape what ends up in your bins?
Tucked into southeast North Carolina, we are 1/4 mile from the beach. The shop has about 2,500 records in it and is carefully curated to have something for everyone. Our wheelhouse is preloved records from 1950-1990 and we also have new/sealed records with genres like rock, pop, jazz, punk and country.
Every record in the shop is on our website and there are about 1,000 additional records on the site. For website customers we offer 10% off 4 or more preowned records every day and ship to all 50 states.
You ask sellers about genre, era, and condition - what answers actually help you decide fast whether a collection's promising?
I like to know the story or history of the records. Whose are they? Tell me about that person, Also where and how were they stored? I usually ask them to send me a few pictures before we connect in person.
Do certain records just do better in a beach town than they would in a bigger city shop?
Strangely enough yes. Beach music obviously does well. Records from bands from North Carolina sell quickly. There are also a few random records, like Bad Company Straight Shooter, for some mysterious reason, that sell very quickly.
For rock, pop, or country LPs from the 60s through 80s, what condition details should people check before reaching out?
Finding out where they were stored helps a lot. If they say “in my shed” I know they may have mold or carry that lovely musty shed smell:)
What does "Big Love" mean in the way you treat collectors and regulars?
I’m personally a big time music and vinyl lover and that was the major inspiration for the Big Love name. There’s also a wink to Fleetwood Mac and some spiritual influence in the name. Our goal is for collectors and regulars to feel that love when they visit and interact with us.
How did you end up opening a record shop on Oak Island specifically?
I love this question because I have to go back forty years to answer it.
My 11th grade English composition teacher assigned an essay about what we wanted to do when we grew up. During those high school days, I was completely entrenched in music. I had also found my entrepreneurial spark and built a large vinyl collection utilizing some pretty unconventional tactics. I tell this story in more detail in my video interviews here:

What's the most unexpected collection that's come through your door?
A senior lady shocked me with a large collection of mostly first press hardcore NYC punk bands with band member notes, set lists and other goodies inside.
Is there a kind of customer - tourist, local, collector - that surprises you the most?
One of the favorite things I hear visitors say is “I’ve been looking forever for this record”.
What's a record you'd love to see walk in that you haven't come across yet?
The Beatles Butcher (of course).
What would you want someone visiting the island for the first time to know about the shop?
We are located inside a very cool marketplace called Crossroads. You can grab a coffee, beer or wine and enjoy the beautiful back porch water view. Every Friday we drop new arrivals and go live on YouTube and Facebook to show the new stuff.
