Interview with Matt Anthony's Record Shop
Matt Anthony's is a boutique shop with a real point of view — what would a regular tell a newcomer you're known for?
Quality new and pre-loved records we price to beat the internet, everything from Pop Classics to Esoterica.

You've built a solid jazz collection and a dedicated Louisville section for local artists — how did those two become signatures of the shop?
I like all music but I love Jazz the most, and have always tried to make a Shop where I’d want to go, so that drives the Jazz section. I’ve always supported the Louisville scene which I see as one of the best in the World.

Louisville's scene doesn't always get its due — who comes through your door, and how's the local record world?
Louisville has always quietly been a music city, we get overshadowed by Nashville and Chicago which we’re sandwiched but also a subtle blend of both if you’re paying attention.
What's the most valuable or surprising record that's come through the door?
The funny thing about valuable records is no one has ever heard of them except the seller and buyer. I’ve never found in life any connection between quality and price.
When someone brings in a collection, how do you approach valuing it?
I believe in win/win capitalism and try to give the seller a fair price and allow myself to beat internet prices.
Roughly what does a common record fetch versus something you're genuinely excited to buy?
I have a good reputation and pay fair prices for records I need, the Shop is small so the flip side is I’m very picky and only buy what I need.
Your jazz runs deep on LP — do the older jazz and pop 45s and 78s still hold value for you, or is it an album game now?
Jazz in my Shop is primarily a 12” LP game. Though there are rabid ‘78 & 10” collectors out there, it’s a tough niche for a brick and mortar to sustain.
What do people most often get wrong about what their records are worth?
Funny thing about human nature: if someone wants to buy a record they “saw it online for a buck”, if they want to sell me that same record they “saw it online for a thousand dollars”.
