Interview with Greenfield Records

Greenfield Records sits right on Main Street in a real western Massachusetts downtown. How does that local setting shape who walks in?

Western Mass as a whole is incredibly fortunate to have several record stores so many of our customers are collectors making the rounds. Greenfield is at the crossroads of 91 and the Mohawk Trail, also bringing in people passing through on scenic drives. We also have many beloved Greenfield customers, some who started collecting when we opened up 17 years ago.

What kinds of used records are most useful for your bins right now?

We love off-beat, unusual records of all genres. Our "bread and butter" continues to be classic rock and jazz. Our store carries vintage vinyl almost exclusively rather than new records and we have high turnover, so we're always buying.

When someone wants to sell a collection, what should they send over before showing up with boxes?

It is best to call ahead (413-775-0069) and come by 11-3 Wednesday-Friday. We don't mind if folks show up with boxes if the collection isn't huge. Pictures/lists can be sent to djdutch@gmail.com. Condition is king. When folks call, we ask: how have they been stored (not moldy from a basement), how clean are they, what genres. Then we can decide if they should come in.

Do you buy full collections, individual titles, or does it depend on the records?

It depends on the records. Mostly we buy from walk-ins, but if someone localish calls who has an interesting collection, we might go to their home.

Are there genres or local/regional records you pay special attention to?

We have an extensive jazz and rock selection and always need those. We are always looking for hip hop, metal and international records which are harder to come by here.

What condition problems do sellers most often underestimate?

Mold. Many don't realize the importance of clean covers. We are sticklers for clean vinyl.

What's the most memorable collection that's come through your door?

We had a Jamaican musician with access to lots of rare reggae records he would bring in for months.

What would you want a first-time visitor to Greenfield Records to expect?

We've heard from folks that our store is more organized (and affordable) than most. We don't carry brand-new vinyl, so come ready to get nostalgic.
