How has Ernie November changed over the years, and what's stayed the same?

While the basics have always been in place: Vinyl and CDs (new and used), incense/incense accessories, and head shop items (glassware/rolling papers/etc.). Over the years we've been able to expand what we have to offer thanks to the size of our store. You can now also find a wide selection of skateboard gear including decks, wheels/trucks, bearings and hardware. We also carry a large variety of band t-shirts and tie-dye, as well as what would be described as hippie clothing. Add to that posters/tapestries, lava lamps, and a variety of other novelties and gifts. We aim to be the store that provides Cheyenne with not only cool stuff, but maybe a bit of the weird too!

How does the shop decide which used records to buy?

Keeping a tight focus on what used records we purchase is a definite necessity, unfortunately a lot of records just don't move very well, and end up taking up space on our stands for months and sometimes years. By focusing on certain genres and eras (Rock 60s-forward, metal, punk, jazz, soul, blues) we're able to make sure that our used record racks always have something interesting to look at. Once you have 30+ used Dan Fogelberg records in backstock you realize that it doesn't always hurt to be picky!

What's the most memorable collection you've purchased?

In my time working here, I'd have to say the most memorable collection we purchased was a very large 400+ record collection that had been kept as close to professional archival quality as possible. The owner had unfortunately passed and their son wanted to make sure that the records would find homes so others could appreciate them. The collection covered almost all of the 60s to the early 90s for rock as well as some punk, new wave, and even a little metal.

How does Cheyenne Frontier Days affect who comes through the store, and do country records have a place in the selection?

The big tourist draw of the year for Cheyenne is Frontier Days, a 10 day long event with a massive rodeo/carnival as well as a number of concerts from current country artists. While the event is definitely cowboy/western themed, we still see a large jump in customers.Even though country records/CDs aren't a focus for us we still keep a small selection in both new and used (another thing we tend to be pretty picky about haha), and they tend to be pretty well picked through by the end of the 10 days.

What's the most valuable or surprising record that's come across your counter?

We have a "butcher cover" copy of "Yesterday and Today" from the Beatles that is now framed!

When do you steer someone toward store credit?

We mainly tend to push customers towards store credit if we know they're store regulars or people who are likely going to turn around and start shopping once they've sold us whatever records or CDs they brought in (usually regulars as well).

Roughly what do you offer when purchasing used records?

We try to keep a consistent across the board offering of 1/3 the record value when purchasing used, however exceptions can be easily made for the really cool stuff or if the collection is in really great condition.

Do you buy 45s and 78s, and should sellers clean records first?

Most 45s get put out for $1 unless they're something really unique/cool, so while we do take them we often can't offer much for them, and they're donated to us more often than not. 78s are unfortunately a no go, as there's no real market/desire for them here. And it's always appreciated when records come in clean, but not a strict requirement, we have no problem dusting records off before pricing them up. The only no go's are moldy records/sleeves!

What do people most often get wrong about what their records are worth?

The rise in popularity (as well as price) for new vinyl records has convinced a lot of people that they're sitting on goldmines when unfortunately it's often fodder for the dollar record bin we have.
