Interview with Inner Groove Records

Inner Groove is both a record store and an independent label in Collingswood. How do the two sides feed each other?

We have had the experience of obtaining some rare and amazing albums come through our doors. It’s personal really-I fell in love with the Lim Taylor record and the Little Janice record, so seeing how hard they were to find and that no reissue had ever been done, I set out to license them and do small hand numbered craft batches of them. We did 500 on the Lim Taylor and 333 on the Little Janice. There may be more titles coming soon…

Your bins run punk, hardcore, jazz, soul, funk, metal, and rock, and reviewers single out an extensive Beatles section with rare original pressings. How would you describe the shop's taste?

Tough question! Personally I am 59 and grew up on what we now call “Classic Rock”, so naturally we do a lot in that category. In my 30’s i discovered jazz-Coltrane, Miles, Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean… I love these original hard bop pioneers and we grew quickly with that type of jazz and being known as a shop with great inventory. With our current manager running the store we became bigger with punk, electronic music, and more of the sounds of today. It’s a good balance for us.

You carry turntables from affordable entry-level to high-end audiophile gear. How much of your crowd is building out a setup?

Not enough. As an audio geek I am amazed how many people have such simple setups and I feel a lot of folks don’t realize that you can build something quite nice with good used gear without breaking the bank. We are authorized dealers for several brands and also deal in used equipment. Our goal was never o be a hi fi shop, but we naturally fell into being asked about gear and thus we branched out a bit.

You offer professional grading, fair offers, and even pickup service for collections. What makes a collection an easy yes?

Lack of commonality and condition. There are many great artists who sold a zillion records. Doesn’t take away from their music but they are common titles-we have em sure, but the less well known artist typically are more attractive to us.

People mention your personalized recommendations and informative labels that protect the covers. How central is that care to the shop?

Unless it’s a $1.00 record(we have thousands btw) it goes in a protective sleeve. We try and indicated as much as we can as far as pressing information on the sticker-it’s fun for us to dig deep and be able to tell you the record you hold in your hand is a first press made by the Scranton factory for example with the Capitol label. We like the details! Matrix information can take time to decipher but we feel it is an integral part of the collecting experience.

What do your South Jersey customers reach for most?

Hmmm…classic rock is still #1 I believe. Zeppelin, Beatles, The Who…and the next wave too…Talking Heads, Van Halen….

What's a find that stuck with you?

Around 15 years ago I came across a collection of about 100 original Blue Note LP’s. Staggering condition. I actually kept a fair amount of them and still have them today!

First visit to Inner Groove — what should someone dig through first?

I suppose New arrivals just to see what we have most recently put out, but I think that’s up to you really. We have gotten in some incredibly tasty funk and soul the last few months so if that’s a thing for you I’d look there as it is going out the door fast!
