Interview with Matones Music

Collegeville is outside the big Philadelphia record-shop map, which probably changes the job. What does the local setting mean for what people want?

Everything here kinda operates like every other record store I’ve worked at. I think the biggest change is that there is less of an opportunity to do things like in-stores with touring bands simply because all the venues are at least an hour away.

Who comes in — college-area browsers, longtime Montgomery County collectors, both?

I wouldn’t say that I have a set group for my clientele. I think the youngest collector that comes in now is around 7 years old and there are also customers in their late 80s coming in. Everything around this area is all destination shopping. I have people coming out from Philly and New York to browse through the shop — especially our “Less than $5” bins.

I don’t like to sell online, so all of our rare pieces end up in the shop. We have amassed a good amount of them with a bunch of stuff still coming in daily — that is another thing that gets different folks coming in from far and wide.

How do records fit alongside everything else Matones Music does?

Records and physical media in general are the lifeblood of our store. Pretty much everything we do has some type of physical component to it.

What moves best with your customers?

It is very hard to pigeonhole what our customers pick up in here. I have a very eclectic palate. I try and carry a little bit of everything in the shop. For the last 10 years I’ve kinda just built out the sections based on what I am into at the time. That has led to some pretty diverse bins in here. We definitely move a lot of metal, bluegrass, hip-hop, newer alternative, jam bandy stuff, and your typical classic rock.

Do local Pennsylvania bands show up in what people ask for or bring in?

We carry a ton of PA bands — there are so many great ones! Ween, Dead Milkmen, Modern Baseball, Kurt Vile, Low Cut Connie, Title Fight, Mannequin Pussy, Apes of the State, and Dr. Dog all sell well in here just to name a few. We also have a local music section which has some awesome albums from artists like Kelli Maning, Mighty Theodore, and Last Full Measure. We used to host something called “Shop Sessions” in here where we would film local bands performing 2 songs. We had to stop due to space restraints, but the YouTube channel is still up. That was a ton of fun and something I hope to be able to do again someday.

If someone wants to sell vinyl, what should they do before showing up with boxes — and how selective is the buying?

There isn’t really any prep work needed for when people bring in collections. I am always buying and most people just randomly pop in with stuff. For larger collections I am always happy to make house calls. We pretty much buy everything except polkas, classical, children’s records, and easy listening. I won’t pick things up if they are moldy or scratched too badly. Other than that pretty much everything is fair game.

What's been the biggest surprise about selling records in Collegeville?

I think the biggest surprise hasn’t been with selling records as much as buying them. I am constantly amazed by the diversity of the used collections that come through here. You wouldn’t think that a random suburb would be a hotbed of cool records, but it is. I am always excited to go through people’s boxes.

First visit — what should someone ask about or flip through?

Everyone has their own plan of attack when it comes to exploring new stores. The Just-In bin is generally a good place to start. I put out at least 25 fresh used titles a day and on Thursdays and Fridays I flood the store with new releases and back catalog stuff across various genres. Our “Less than $5” bins are a super popular place people start. I always make sure to let people know that 100% of our used titles in here are ultrasonically cleaned and placed in high quality inner sleeves before they hit the floor.
