Interview with Total Drag
Reviewers say Total Drag feels like it belongs in a much bigger city — immaculate, well laid out, downtown Sioux Falls. How do you see the shop's place in the local scene?
I think an independent record store is vital to any thriving live music scene
You take trades for cash or store credit and will track down and ship records people are hunting. What makes a collection an easy yes when it comes in?
Condition is huge, but anything that seems interesting I'm pretty much interested in!
People single out Dan's knowledge and the great music always playing — someone caught a dub record spinning. How much does what's on the turntable shape the vibe?
It's important to keep fun and interesting records on the turntable, it's definitely how people discover new stuff!
Your selection balances classics, used vinyl, and newer music. How do you keep that range fresh?
We are always searching for great new music, and we definitely lean a little more towards the Indie/Underground stuff in all genres for new music, but we really try to have something from every type.
Staff picks come up a lot. How do you approach steering people toward something new?
We have a dedicated area for staff picks (which is just my wife and I here, we don't have any employees) but by this point a LOT of people will just come in and ask what I've been digging lately!
What does the Sioux Falls crowd reach for most?
It's ever changing:)
When someone wants to sell records, what's the best way to start — and does most of it come as trades?
Shoot us a message, give us a call or just stop down!
First visit to Total Drag — what should someone dig through first?
I always go for the Recent Arrivals sections (new and used) first
