Interview with Killerfinds

Killerfinds mixes records, games, CDs, cassettes, VHS, and memorabilia, with a focus on metal and rock. How did that collector-shop identity come together?

A mix between employee and customer knowledge, wants, and needs really. We have always been collectors ourselves, so we naturally gravitated toward the things we love and the things our community gets excited about. Over time, listening to our customers and seeing what people were searching for helped shape the store into what it is today.

The result is a shop built by collectors, for collectors, where you can find everything from records and retro games to VHS, cassettes, CDs, memorabilia, and plenty of metal and rock culture along the way. It has grown organically through the passion of both our staff and our customers, and that is what makes Killerfinds unique.

Being family-owned in a smaller Georgia market gives the shop a different feel from an Atlanta store. What do local customers come hunting for?

Honestly, it starts with the atmosphere. From the music playing throughout the store to our free arcade games, people come in for more than just shopping. They come for the experience. Customers are always hunting for collectibles, anime merchandise, trading card games, tabletop games, records, retro video games, and so much more.

We also have a large apparel selection that ranges from band tees and metal merchandise to pop culture favorites, which helps us connect with a much broader audience. Whether you are a dedicated collector looking for something specific or someone just browsing with friends and family, there is usually something that catches your eye. We see customers from multiple generations enjoying the store together, and that is something we are really proud of.

If someone has records plus games, tapes, VHS, or memorabilia, what should they mention when reaching out?

If anybody is looking at trading anything in, the best thing to do is bring it by so we can take a look at it. We handle such a wide variety of items that it is easier for us to see exactly what you have rather than trying to describe it over the phone or online. We buy and trade records, video games, tapes, VHS, collectibles, memorabilia, and a lot more.

One of the biggest things we look at is condition. We are very particular about condition because we want to make sure we are offering our customers the best products possible. The more information you can provide and the better the condition, the easier it is for us to evaluate what you are bringing in.

Are metal and rock your strongest categories, or do customers surprise you with other genres?

We carry a wide range of genres, including hip-hop, punk, jazz, reggae, R&B, pop, and indie, so we try to bring in as much variety as possible. Our goal is to have something for every music fan who walks through the door.

That said, rock and metal are definitely the leading genres in our store overall and continue to be some of our strongest and most sought-after categories. Even so, our customers constantly surprise us with their diverse tastes, which is why we work hard to keep a broad selection available.

What makes something a true killer find rather than just another used record?

I would say it comes down to quality and the overall experience. When it comes to used records, we are extremely picky about what we bring in and put on our shelves. We do not want to see records covered in scratches. While some people might say that adds character, we also know it can lead to skips, pops, and other issues that take away from the listening experience.

How did the shop end up covering so many different kinds of collectibles?

We started out primarily focused on music and video games, with a built-in arcade that helped create a unique experience for our customers. From there, the community really helped shape what Killerfinds would become. Our customers told us what they were looking for, and we listened.

The reason we have expanded into so many different types of collectibles is simple: we care. We are not just listening to the community; we are part of the community ourselves. We share many of the same interests and passions as our customers, so it is exciting for us to bring in new categories and products that people are genuinely excited about. Being able to grow alongside our community and help connect people with the things they love is something we truly appreciate every day.

What is the best find that has come through the door recently?

That is a tough one. While it is not record-related, one of the coolest recent finds we have brought in is a stand-up Cruis'n USA arcade cabinet. They are becoming harder to find, and it is a really fun piece of arcade history.

We are planning to add it to our soon-to-open second location in Rome, GA, where customers will be able to enjoy it as part of our Free Play arcade experience. Of course, if the right collector comes along, it is also available for purchase. Finds like that are exciting because they capture what Killerfinds is all about: bringing unique and nostalgic pieces of gaming, music, and pop culture history back into the hands of people who appreciate them.

Is there a type of collector, such as VHS, retro games, or vinyl, that has grown the most?

Recently, Pokemon collectors have probably seen the biggest growth overall. The popularity of Pokemon cards and related collectibles continues to bring in both longtime fans and a new generation of collectors.

At the same time, we have seen growth across nearly every category we carry. Vinyl continues to be incredibly strong, and cassette tape collectors keep showing up looking for everything from classic releases to harder-to-find gems. It is exciting because we are seeing interest from collectors of all kinds, whether they are into trading cards, retro games, music, VHS, or other nostalgic collectibles. The hobby as a whole feels healthy and continues to grow.

What would you tell someone in Hiram who has never set foot in the shop?

I would tell them to give local businesses a chance. It is easy to stick with the big names and national chains, but sometimes the places that surprise you the most are the small, locally owned shops you have never stepped into before.

Not every shop will be the right fit for every person, but you will never know what you might find until you walk through the door. Maybe it is a rare collectible you have been searching for, a new hobby you discover, or just an experience you were not expecting. We may not be a household name, and we are okay with that. What we offer is something different: a unique experience built by collectors and enthusiasts who genuinely love what they do.

That goes for more than just Killerfinds. I would encourage people to support any local business and see what they have to offer. You might be surprised by what you find.
