Interview with McKay's Mebane

McKay's runs on a simple, unusual engine — everything on the shelves came from another customer. How does an all-trade-in model shape what a McKay's feels like?

If you find something on our shelves, that means that someone else in our community owned it at some point. For whatever reason, it ended up at McKay’s, and now it has another chance at being part of someone’s collection. As a shopper, you get the chance to see what your neighbors are interested in, and you can discover something that you weren’t even looking for.

With inventory this large and constantly rotating across books, music, movies and games, how does vinyl hold its own corner in the mix?

McKay’s has a little of everything, but vinyl definitely holds its own. Record collecting has seen a huge resurgence recently, especially as younger generations embrace physical media over digital, and that has filtered into the secondhand market. Over the past few years, we’ve continually expanded the shelving in our vinyl section in response to growing demand.

You've got locations across Tennessee and North Carolina — how does the record selection differ from town to town, given it's all locally sourced?

All of our locations have a unique range of offerings depending on what customers bring in to sell. The 4 best-selling record categories at McKay’s Mebane are Rock/Pop, Soundtracks, Country, and Rap. Our 2 best-selling albums are Lana Del Ray’s Born to Die and AC/DC’s Back in Black.

What's the most surprising record that's turned up in a trade-in?

There are surprising records every day! Interesting recent record trade-ins have included Aleister Crowley’s Original Wax Recordings, a box set of the soundtrack for The Thing, and a tin box set of MF Doom’s Operation: Doomsday.

With so much walking in the door, what records do people most often assume are valuable that just aren't?

Every record has value to the right person. At McKay's we know that hunting for bargain treasures can be what makes the experience worth it.

For a seller bringing a big mixed lot of media, what's worth knowing before they haul it in?

Most media must be in its original case for us to consider it. That means records should be in their original covers, and 45s should be in paper sleeves. Movies and CDs require their original cases, but we’ll consider some video games without a case.

What should a first-time visitor know before diving into a McKay's for the first time?

If you’re just browsing, there are guides throughout the store letting you know where various categories are shelved, but you can always ask us for help, too! If you’d like to bring in items for evaluation, our website has helpful overviews of how to sell and trade, as well as lists of common items that we take and don’t take.
