Loudmouth

Loudmouth is a Brooklyn-based shop dedicated to hip-hop culture, record collecting, and community. Located at 348 Marcus Garvey Boulevard, the store features a curated selection of hip-hop records, cassettes, and vintage magazines. Interview with Loudmouth

Loudmouth is built around hip-hop — records, cassettes, vintage magazines, plus streetwear and a gallery. How did all of that come together in one space?

The concept of Loudmouth took form as an extension of my own interests and as a way to sustain our presence in the space. I compiled a selection of stuff I had been lucky enough to collect/inherit over the years. As I continued to seek out and curate intentional inventory, locals in the neighborhood slowly caught on, and it became a community space for likeminded people to access vintage media.

You're on Marcus Garvey Blvd in Bed-Stuy, deep in Brooklyn hip-hop history. What does Loudmouth mean to that block, and who's coming through?

We are primarily a hub for creatives and collectors in the neighborhood but we also host events centering political activism and specifically those that deal with issues affecting this district. We are active with the Merchant Association, host events with non-profits and political orgs, and even hosted a debate between two candidates for state senate earlier this year.

For a hip-hop head digging your bins, what's in there that they won't find at a general record shop?

Heads will find a diverse stock of local and independent hip-hop records, CDs and cassettes as well as a number of classic and contemporary hip-hop records. We lean heavily into our own taste for underground hip-hop and you won’t find a lot of mainstream stuff here.

You take consignment albums. How does that work at Loudmouth, and why go that route?

We keep 20%, they keep 80%. We have had to increase our consignment percentage in other facets of the business but keeping consignment accessible for local artists is a point of pride for us.

When someone brings a hip-hop collection in to sell, what are you looking for first?

When someone brings in a collection I’m looking at condition, whether it’s an original versus repress, the overall desirability of the music, whether it contains stuff I am personally interested in,  etc. — all these things factor into the value.

What quietly turns out worth more in hip-hop than people expect — a record or tape they'd almost pass on?

Look stuff up on Discogs! Just because you aren’t aware of a record doesn’t mean it doesn’t have value. A lot of regional rap records from 20-30 years ago go for mad bread now. Also, value is a tricky thing in general. There are records I paid $5 for that I wouldn’t sell for $100 just because it’s hard to find in person or something I have a strong personal connection with.

The space is also a gallery and event venue. What do those nights add to the shop?

Having a gallery allows us to put more emphasis and appreciation on the visual element of music. We primarily highlight artists who do album covers, concert flyers, or are active in the community locally. Giving shine to the visual artists behind the scene is a big part of our ethos.

The concerts are something we always wanted to do and once we built a stage in the backyard people started booking their own shows here like crazy. It’s an honor to be able to contribute to hip-hop and NY music culture, which has always been our biggest priority.

Vintage rap magazines are a specific thing to carry. Who's after those, and what's the appeal?

Vintage rap magazines are more important than ever. A lot of the interviews that provide historical context aren’t available anywhere online. The only way to learn more details about a lot of hip-hop history from the people who lived it is to track down these pieces. Many of the magazines also contain photos from legendary shoots and photographers, exclusive interviews with posthumous artists, and a tangible nostalgia that people seek out.

Has anything ever come through that you almost couldn't believe was real?

We have had visits from Westside Gunn, Talib Kweli, 9th Wonder, Conductor Williams who performed here, and so many more! Those moments are crazy full circle for me because I will always be a fan first. I want to be successful and make a lot of money doing what I love but those are definitely peak times that remind me why I do this.

After all this, what still makes it worth opening the doors?

The art comes first! I’m a soldier for this shit because I love this community and I want to see the scene sustain. I genuinely feel like it’s my duty to see this through. If not us then who???
