Interview with Grandaddy Records & Vintage

You fell for a vacant downtown Brooksville storefront and imagined "the coolest little record shop" — and Tyler was already selling collections online. How did that become Grandaddy?

It all seemed to happen really naturally. We had always talked about maybe opening a shop one day and would just kinda daydream about it. Every time we passed that building we’d talk about how cool the space was and how it’d be perfect for a little shop but it was always occupied and I just didn’t even know where to start with something like that. In a small town, spaces like that rarely go “on the market”, it just seemed to have a new business in there every couple of years. I happened to be walking downtown one day (which I rarely did at the time) and there was a “for rent” sign in the window. I walked (ran) in and the shop owner said yeah the landlord just put that sign there about 5 minutes ago. I called him, called Sydney, and some driving force just took over and here we are! Once the building was secured I felt like we already knew what we wanted it to be. It just came together. I had actually had the @grandaddyrecords instagram and website for years and was pretty much just waiting for the opportunity.

It's a record shop and a vintage-clothing shop run by a couple in a small, sleepy town — how do the two halves fit together, and how's the town treated you?

Yeah I mean I think there’s some overlap in the audience for those things. We’re certainly a record shop first but we love all things vintage and think it makes for a dynamic shop. The town has been great to us and it’s really turned into a hub for people looking for something different.

Brooksville's off the usual Tampa Bay record map — who's coming through, and how's the local scene?

Yeah it’s not necessarily the first town that comes to mind when people think record shopping but honestly there’s a music crowd everywhere and they will find you. People around us are thankful to have a spot close to home. We really try to bring the heat with our inventory and make people say “Wait, in Brooksville?!” The scene is certainly growing and Brooksville is turning into a really cool place with great people. Same goes for our Dade City location.

What's the most valuable or surprising record that's come through the door?

Man we’ve had some pretty wild stuff through the doors. We’re certainly the hub for selling collections within the Pasco/Hernando area so we see it all. We also make it a point to pay high for quality records. People know that we’ll be honest and fair when paying for the good stuff. We get everything from OG GG Allin to the coveted Orange Variant of T. Swift’s Reputation. Something new every day.

You buy, sell and trade — coming from the online-selling world, how do you approach valuing a collection in person?

I spend entirely too much time on Discogs. Especially in circumstances where I may not be familiar with everything in the collection I like to be able to really comb through it and make sure it’s a fair deal for everyone involved.

Roughly what does a common record fetch versus something you're excited to buy?

If it’s something rare that we don’t see often, especially if it excites me and even if we know we might sit on it for a bit, I will make a strong offer. We see the common stuff every day as well and still pay well for it because the people love Rumours & Aja!

Beyond LPs you handle CDs and cassettes — do 45s and the smaller formats still move for you, or has that demand dried up?

CD’s seem to be having a comeback especially with the younger folks which I love to see. Cassettes and 45’s still sell but certainly not at the same rate. Personally, I still get excited about really nice cassette or 45 collections and will always try to carry them.

What do people most often overvalue about their records — and what quietly sells better than they'd guess?

I think there can be a misconception with things like Elvis and the Beatles. People hear that records are big right now and think they’re sitting on a gold mine with that stuff. They’re two of the best selling artists for a reason, a lot of ‘em out there! Tyler Childers was our best seller as far as new records go last year. That might surprise some people until they hear we're in Brooksville, then it's "Ah yeah that makes sense".
