Interview with Delirium Vinyl

How did Delirium Vinyl get started in Decatur, and what's the story behind the name?

We wanted to be close to Atlanta and to find a community-oriented part of the city. We definitely found that in Decatur. The name came about after a late night, back-and-forth about what to call the shop and ultimately we concluded we were delirious after a few hours. It was the perfect name after that.

What kind of records does the shop lean into — what would a regular say Delirium is known for?

We carry a selection of almost every genre but the ones that Decatur has shown most interest in are alternative/indie, hip hop, R&B, and international. I think a regular would say we were known for our friendly help.

Decatur has its own identity just outside Atlanta; who comes through your door, and how's the local scene?

Decatur is incredibly diverse but I would say that the type of person who comes through our doors is one who is comfortable with their neighbors being of different races and creeds.

What should first-time visitors know before they walk in?

That we’re here to help and to answer any and all questions no matter if that question comes from a first time buyer or a collector who has thousands. We tried to build a welcoming atmosphere and I think it shows.

What's the most valuable or surprising record that's come through the shop?

We just had a 3000 piece collection that was almost entirely soul, funk, and R&B. People are still finding treasures from it.

Do you buy records from the public, and how do you approach valuing a collection?

We buy every day. We’re different from most shops in the way we pay for collections. When someone brings in a stack, we assign a value to every record which represents what we put it on the floor for. We offer 40% cash or 60% trade of that assigned price. Sellers are free to take pieces out with no pressure whatsoever. We do not lowball.

Do you buy 45s and 78s, or is it LP-focused?

We buy CDs, cassettes, and records of any kind. As long as we can use it, we’ll offer on it.

Should sellers clean records before bringing them in, and what condition problems hurt value most?

We don’t buy scratched records, minor scuffs are ok but not feel-able marks. Unless sellers are confident in what they’re cleaning records with, we don’t suggest cleaning them.

What do people most often get wrong about what their records are worth?

Misconceptions arise from checking websites for what people are asking - not what they’re actually sold for.
