Psychic Hotline's Mailroom Outlet & Newsstand turns a working label mailroom into a Saturday storefront in Durham. It is part shop, part community space, and part direct connection between an artist-first label and the people who buy, hear, and talk about the records.
Interview with Grand Opening: Psychic Hotline Mailroom Outlet & Newsstand
The Mailroom is a wonderfully specific idea — a record label's actual shipping room that opens its front to fans on Saturdays. How did Psychic Hotline turn its mailroom into a storefront?
The basic idea, really, is that we don't feel the need to sequester ourselves away from the general public. Inviting folks in is the best policy for any business- not only does it motivate us to keep the space tidy and presentable, but people bring their ideas, passion and energy and we meet them right where we are. Getting music into people's hands and ears is great, but really it's just a great opportunity to meet our neighbors.
Psychic Hotline was built to be a radically artist-first label by the folks behind Sylvan Esso — how does that artist-led ethos show up in the Mailroom itself?
I'd say that ethos shows up directly through many of our regular events. Oftentimes our artists will be hanging out in the mailroom, signing records, maybe performing or DJing... or maybe even making crepes... you never really know what you might find haha! Beyond records, we also carry art prints, apparel, books and other publications made by our artists and friends of the label.
You've hosted DJ takeovers, coffee collabs, even an animal-rescue-meets-records day — how did the Mailroom become a little creative hub for Durham?
I'd say the mailroom is just a great zone for all of us here at Psychic Hotline to project our wild ideas on. At the end of the day, we all love hanging out and having a good time, and we like to keep it fresh by dreaming up any imaginable way to collaborate in the space. Durham is a great town, and there's really no shortage of people doing cool and compelling creative work to collaborate with. It just makes sense to do more with a retail space, and... teamwork makes the dream work!
Durham's music scene has real momentum — who comes through the Mailroom, and how does it fit in?
I'd say a majority of folks that you run into at Grand Opening, or any record store for that matter, are more than just music fans. In many cases they are creating music themselves in one way or another. It's not unlikely that you'll cross paths with an established artist in our building, but you never know- you might strike up a conversation with the next person to really put Durham on the map. At the end of the day, we're not trying to put ourselves or anybody in particular on a pedestal... or maybe we want to make everybody that walks through the door feel like they're on the same pedestal with us haha!
Your team mostly comes from record-store backgrounds and loves sharing music face to face — what's that in-person connection give people that ordering online can't?
This might be one of those "if you have to ask, you'll never know" kind of questions. We love all of our customers, regardless of where they're buying from (of course!) but there's just nothing better than the human to human interactions you'll find in a record store. Sharing and exploring music and art with each other is what it's all about and really it's just good for the soul- I encourage everybody to try it out with an open mind and wild abandon!
For someone who only knows Sylvan Esso, what else on the label would you press into their hands at the Mailroom?
Oh man- there's really something for everybody. The utterly transcendent singer-songwriting of Ichiko Aoba, a diverse and enrapturing array of Brazilian musical traditions explored by Tim Bernardes, Ana Frango Elétrico and Amaro Freitas, the deceptively psychedelic pastoral soundscapes of William Tyler, the sublime solo piano works of Phil Cook, the propulsive electronic excursions of GRRL x Made of Oak, the new dimensions in the outposts of the jazz realm from players like Joe Westerlund and Amy Gadiaga... I can go on and on (and on and on).
As a label pressing its own records, what do you wish more people understood about how vinyl actually gets made and priced?
I think we understand that our patrons and supporters understand that everything in the world is more expensive than it used to be from top to bottom. We understand that when folks invest in our products and artists, that they are trusting us to provide seriously quality goods that we really believe in. I think we're less interested in explaining the economics of the industry to our customers and more interested in demonstrating that there is so much incredible art out there that is worth investing in, and that we here at Psychic Hotline are committed to creating avenues for people to experience and find joy in that art. If we didn't believe in it, we wouldn't be doing it!
What's a Mailroom moment that best captures what Psychic Hotline is about?
It's hard to choose just one really: Phil Cook griddling and tossing pancakes over his back for customers to catch on plates (a family tradition), Sylvan Esso joining fans in person to tie dye shirts, Ichiko Aoba dropping by and secretly autographing stock before her Carolina Theater performance, Hope Animal Rescue spending an afternoon with us and allowing patrons to meet and greet puppies that are up for adoption. That's what we're all about, creating a fun, welcoming environment where almost anything goes as long as it's in the service of cultivating good, nourishing, encouraging and enriching vibes for our friends and neighbors.
