Dead Wax Records brings a record-shop corner to Rolesville through Main Street Collective, with a tight LP-focused setup, request tracking and used records cleaned before they hit the bins. The name is a record-collector tell, and the shop's small footprint shapes both the buying and the browsing.

In this interview, B. Watkins talks about the name, Rolesville's place in the Triangle record scene, condition standards and why most buying is done outright rather than on consignment.

"Dead Wax" is a name only a real record person picks. What's the story behind it, and how did the shop start inside the Main Street Collective in Rolesville?

Record collectors spend a lot of time checking the dead wax of a vinyl record to determine the pressing, year, etc. so for me it was a simple choice along with being a big Grateful Dead fan so those two things inspired the name and logo. The location was important because I'm a lifelong resident of Rolesville and wanted to offer people in this area an opportunity to browse record bins without always having to travel outside of the community.

You keep a request sheet for hard-to-find titles and post finds on Instagram. How often do you actually track down what someone's after?

We work hard to fill that request list, sometimes we are successful and it's rewarding for us when we can connect a customer with something on their "wantlist"

You grade VG+ or better and rotate stock in a small, alphabetized space. How do you decide what earns a spot in a tight footprint?

We honestly try to have something for everyone from the entry level shopper to the seasoned collector. We try to keep up with what customers are currently interested in as well as stocking the collection builders

Rolesville is a small town outside Raleigh; who comes through, and how's the Triangle-area record scene?

We have customers from the community but we also have folks from out of town that have heard about our little place one way or another. The triangle record scene is pretty diverse, there are several indy record stores that tend to specialize in one thing or another and some even carry multiple product lines.

What's the most valuable or surprising record that's rotated through your bins?

We were fortunate enough to purchase an old school hip-hop/rap collection about 6 months ago and most of those titles were rare and pricey, in the $50-$250 range for a single LP.

You do consignment with fair pricing. How does that work alongside buying, and which do sellers prefer?

So far we have not taken any consignments. We typically buy collections outright.

Roughly what does a common record fetch versus something you're excited to stock?

Most of the common records in a VG+ condition will be $5-$8. First pressings, rare or limited pressings tend to run that price up. Color variants, double LP's if sealed/new tend to be much pricier at $25 and up.

Do you buy 45s and 78s, or is it LP-focused?

Strictly LP focused, 45s and 78s are a little too much of a niche audience for our small space.

Should sellers clean records before bringing them, and what condition problems hurt value most?

No need to clean before bringing them in. We ultrasonically clean all of our used inventory before they reach our bins. The biggest thing that hurts value on the vinyl is what we call a "feeler", which is a scratch you can feel. And as far as the jacket goes seam splits and taped seams affect the overall value.

What do people most often get wrong about what their records are worth?

Worth to a collector and a reseller are two different numbers. A reseller has to see some profit in his purchase of a collection. I feel like our customers have a reasonable expectation of what we will offer them for their collection. If I'm not fair they don't come back and they don't send their friends to us.
