Interview with Rebop Record Shop

Rebop Record Shop has an interesting connection — the contact goes through WCUW, Worcester's community radio station. That suggests the shop is tied to the station somehow, whether it's inside the WCUW space or an offshoot of the community there. Can you walk us through what Rebop actually is and how it connects to the station?

The Rebop Record Shop is part of WCUW, at 910 Main St. Within the building we have a performance and movie space (called the Frontroom), The Harold Stevens Art Gallery, and the Rebop Record shop. Any funds coming in from the shop help to support WCUW, since we are a non-profit, 501C organization. A percentage of the fees from ticket sales for music and film events, as well as any art sales from the gallery help support the station. Together, we are a cultural space for the community.

Worcester is genuinely one of the great under-covered music cities — the college crowd (Clark, WPI, Holy Cross, Assumption), the long DIY history, the community radio scene. Who actually walks into Rebop, and what does the Worcester music taste look like from behind the counter?

Many of our record sales occur during music and film events, when the shop is open and the event goers can browse. Some buyers are students, some search for record shops and find us!

A record shop connected to a community radio station is a specific kind of ecosystem — you're plugged directly into what's being played and what listeners are asking about. How does that connection actually shape what you stock and buy?

Again, ALL OF OUR RECORDS ARE DONATED! We do not “stock” the shop. The programmer play what they want, sometimes scouring the shop if they like. We accept cash and Venmo. Since all records are donated there is no store credit.
