Dothan Nurseries Greenhouse, Gardens, & Gifts
Record store in Dothan, AL
1300 Montgomery Hwy, Dothan, AL 36303, Dothan, AL
Dothan Nurseries is exactly the kind of unlikely vinyl stop that makes a directory interesting: a garden center with koi ponds, a butterfly house, gem mining, gifts, and a serious record section. JD's answers explain how records ended up beside the plants and why people now make the trip for vinyl itself.
Interview with Dothan Nurseries Greenhouse, Gardens, & Gifts
A garden center with koi ponds, a butterfly house, gem mining — and a vinyl section. How on earth did records end up alongside the plants?
I've just always been a big music fan. Played drums my whole life, love all kinds of music. Started collecting records in 2015 and had a small selection of about 500 we sold to start with. Also, a lot of times, the wife or girlfriend is the one shopping for plants, so it gives the guys something to do.
What made you decide vinyl belonged in a nursery, and how do customers react when they stumble on the records?
Just trying to add another way to get new guests out to the nursery. Most can't believe it, then they can't believe the selection.
Who's buying records here — plant shoppers who didn't expect it, or people making a special trip for the vinyl?
Used to be plant shoppers who didn't expect, but now people come just for the vinyl. Some come every week!
How do you choose what records to stock in a space this unusual?
I'm 50, so you know there is plenty of stuff from the 1960 - 2000. But I have teenage sons that help me stay on top of what's new and cool. and i take recommendations from guests.
Dothan's in the far corner of Alabama; what's the local appetite for vinyl like, and does being a destination help?
Appetite is growing. And yes, there is plenty more to do here, so you can spend an hour or more here easily.
Do you buy records from the public, or is the selection curated by you?
I buy from anywhere I can get them. I buy brand new and used. Just bought a 20,000 album collection 3 months ago!
What's the most surprising record that's turned up in your bins?
An old 45 that had Northern Soul Music on it. Sweet Temptation by Ward Burton. Was an amazing find!
Roughly what does a common record sell for here versus something special?
$5 - $30
Do you carry 45s and 78s at all, or mainly LPs?
Mostly LPs
For someone new to vinyl who wandered in for plants, what should they know before buying their first record?
Get something you like first. Don't go obscure. Find a record from your childhood that you loved. You'll listen to it more.
