Interview with New Style Records

New Style Records — where does the name come from, and how did the shop start?

“And on the cool check-in, center stage on the mic, and we're puttin' it on wax, it's the new style.” Where did that come from?

We wanted to share a new record store experience with our community, one they haven’t had before. Stop in and you will see—a new style of record store. Our mission is simple: New Style Records is guided by the values of integrity, community, and respect; we honor the long tradition of people of all generations listening, sharing, and preserving the music that moves our soul. Join us in keeping physical media alive.

You're on Main Street in Elizabethtown, near Fort Knox and the Louisville orbit. What role does the shop play locally, and who's coming through?

Those communities, plus travelers coming through the I-65 corridor, all bring different interests, and that variety shapes what we bring in, new and used. It's really neat connecting with music from those communities — a lot of conversations, both giving and receiving, add to the atmosphere of New Style Records.

What's in the bins — the formats and genres you're strongest on?

LPs and CDs, new and used, all genres. Our punk and hardcore bins are pretty popular — it reaches deep into the wow factor.

You put "we buy records" right up front. When a collection comes in, what's the first thing that tells you it's worth a close look?

I feel even before look at the records we love connecting with the person bringing it in — learning where the music came from, who owned it, why it needs a new home, and how we keep it out of a landfill or getting destroyed at donation centers. Then I look at the puzzle: can we use it, and if not, who can — and how do I connect them with it? Sometimes you spot cookie crumbs through a collection that tell you alot from where they came from or is it's just part of a bigger haul. Most of the time I can find something worth the person's trip, or worth an on-site visit.

What's the record that's far more common than people believe?

We see a lot of Herb Alpert records and Jim Neighbors 👀.

What's the sleeper — the stuff that moves better than anyone expects?

Video game music.

You advertise that you buy records — when someone sells, how does the cash-versus-credit split usually go?

Case by case. It depends on a few factors: whether they're a repeat customer, the size of the collection, and what's in it. Super-obscure, high-end pieces a collector might want to trade in can take up real estate and be a slow burn to sell, so those sometimes are in need of a blended deal — or something special. I make it a point that everyone is happy once a deal is completed.

Kentucky summers are humid and a lot of records come out of a basement. What condition damage do you see most?

Humidity and water, hands down. I've stood in wet basements, on dirt floors in front rooms, sweating in a parking lot looking in the back of a farmer's pickup truck. In all of that, I've only ever had one seller's records come in with outer sleeves on :) — and mostly those were Jim Reeves and Duane Eddy. We still value helping those find a nice home.

What's the one that got away — a record you saw come and go too fast?

Have Heart's The Things We Carry LP.

What's something you're excited about for the shop in the coming year?

Live bands — and maybe a record label. We want to keep the music experience continuous. Collecting records is a good hobby.
