Folklore Records+Drinks+Food
Record store in Napa, CA
1226 3rd St, Napa, CA 94559, Napa, CA 94559
We carry new and used records with a focus on Rock and Pop. The only 'exclusive' records we carry are from Record Store Day. We do not really focus on the rare or collectible so if that is your focus we may not be the best choice for you but by all means come and check us out. There are two other record stores in the area you can check out as well.
Thank you, Faith

Interview with Folklore Records+Drinks+Food
Folklore mixes records with drinks and food — a pretty unusual combination. How did that concept come together in Napa?
We thought it would be great to combine wine and records because music and wine are two of our passions and careers. It evolved into a bigger restaurant concept once we obtained a liquor license. We also house a small local non-profit radio station in Folklore. Visiting Folklore you are immersed in a larger version of our house.
Does the food-and-drink side of the shop bring in a different kind of customer than a typical record store?
Most definitely. We seem to be known more for our food and drinks and people who explore the vinyls become enamoured with this aspect of Folklore as well. Perhaps 5% of visitors come strictly for the records.
With a focus on new and used rock and pop, what tells you a used collection is worth a closer look?
We actually have a lot of hip hop as well. Mac Miller remains our top selling artist. Regarding used records, I prioritize their condition and then the depth of the collection. I generally know what will sell, however, I also sell a lot of $5 grab bags so I don't turn away records just because I don't think they will move. Most people prefer you tale the entire collection versus cherry picking only what you really need. In my experience, people just want their collections to find a home and not end up in a landfill.
Do RSD exclusives behave differently in a hybrid space like yours compared to a standard record shop?
My feeling is the RSD titles do great for us on the event days. The buyers with a knowledge of these titles are a different beast, and when they come in, they are happy to have found the RSD titles.
What should someone mention if they're reaching out about selling rock or pop records?
Decades and genres are the most helpful information. When I get the call about 50s and show tunes, I know that is not for me.
What condition issues come up most often with the collections you see?
Musty jackets. So many records I see have been tucked away in closets or boxes for decades. Since we are also a restaurant with an incredible wine list and in a wine making region we have to be very sensitive to the smell they bring into the store.
What's the most memorable record or moment from the shop you can share?
We had The National and Thievery Corporation come in for dinner, which was so great. I love them both.
What would you want a first-time visitor to Folklore to expect?
A great sound system. A thoughtful and comfortable atmosphere and friendly staff. Mostly we want people to feel welcome.
