New 2 U Vinyl & Vintage in Miamisburg sits in Dayton's orbit, where records and vintage goods have grown together inside two connected old storefronts. The answers here move from northern funk 45s and visiting buyers to the practical reality of saving media from basements, mold, and the dump.
Interview with New 2 U Vinyl & Vintage
New 2 U covers vinyl and vintage together. How do the two sides share the space - and the customers?
I moved into the space next to me after Covid, which is 2x my 1st) and that's when I was able to be really become both an independent record store & a vintage store. My new space is 2 old stores connected by a sliding door. The old garage side, became the record store and everything else just fit right in.
Miamisburg is in Dayton's orbit, and Dayton has a heavier music history than people credit - funk especially. Does that legacy show up in the shop?
I've learned so much about my areas history of northern funk and also bluegrass. But I have to say the original early funk from this area is highly saut after and brings high dollars.
I actually had a couple from the uk last year make my store part of their vacation. They found our discogs page and the fact we had some highly sought after funk 45s on sale. They spent 4 hours at the store, listened to over 50 45s, walked out with 8 45s, and a few others thrown in for free. They spent a total of $1,600
I'm a fan and love finding those gems. Many more stories.
Who comes through - locals, Dayton diggers, vintage hunters?
I've spent 8 years building a nice local following, and then I have a little of everything. My guys with a flea market booth, my big buyers who stop once a year while on vacation, I have a Korean buyer who comes 2x a year( starts in Detroit on 1-2 week trip) he buys mainly R&B, Northern Funk from this area
What do your regulars ask for most - and what's been quietly strong lately?
They ask for that 1 hard to find lp to complete their collection, or grandparents asking for frank Sinatra, parents eating to buy their favorites for they kids, and of course everything in between.
What's a find - record or vintage piece - that made your week?
I was just thinking about having a weekly post called favorite finds. Mine this week was a 1978 Garfield doll that sticks to your windshield. And he has a Cupids arrow that says "stuck in you"
If someone wants to sell records or vintage items, what's the best first step - and what makes something an easy yes?
I say yes to anyone, which a big problem. But anything media, iconic 80s-90s is always our favorite. I've said yes to a lot of people who no one else would and found hidden gems, met some of the most incredible people, and worked with aging family members, finding a home for vintage media is our goal. We will keep them out of the dump for many more years.
What condition problems come up most in collections from Ohio basements?
Mold! It's a very hard conversation to have.... These are fantastic artist, and yes these records are worth a lot of money. My reply: absolutely, if they weren't covered in live black paper mold. I tell them I will try to save was I can vinyl wise but that makes them worth very little without the sleave.
First visit to New 2 U - what should someone check first?
My/Our goal at the store is everyone gets greeted, and we say thanking for coming...and in between we give them alittle tour, talk to them, let them have fun. Every person should feel like we want them there versus other stores who just expect them to spend money. I love being that special gift place, that I need to make my wife happy place, and the Friday end of the week stop.
