Siren Records has become a Doylestown fixture for new and used vinyl, with careful genre sections and a regular flow of both collectors and first-time diggers. Siren has become a real Doylestown fixture — nearly 600 reviews' worth of regulars. How would you describe the shop's personality?

The shop is a little bit of everything for everybody. Like, your older sister’s cool college radio station vault. If she worked there for the last 40 years.

Your rock section is subdivided in detail: classic, indie, metal, post-hardcore and emo, post-punk and new wave. What's behind organizing it that carefully?

Blair has meticulously organized the sections/genres.

You've also got extensive jazz, soul, and funk. What does the Bucks County crowd reach for most?

Bill Withers and Stevie Wonder are big sellers. And we sell tons of Blue Note Records reissues.

You buy LPs and 45s from individuals and like to hear what someone has before they bring it by. What makes a collection an easy yes?

Something that makes it easy to say yes to a collection appraisal is a) well stored/cared for records, a picture or two of the items, and genres such as 60s jazz, 80s metal, indie rock, or original blues LPs.

What's been quietly strong in the bins lately?

Olivia Dean has quietly sold very large quantities.

You carry both used and new vinyl. How do you balance the two?

Balancing new and used records is a natural byproduct of division of labor. These days, Blair orders the new releases and restocked new vinyl, and used LP collections come through the record appraiser, Heidi (me).

What's a find or a customer story that captures the shop?

I wouldn’t say ONE thing sticks out right now, but we absolutely LOVE the accidental ephemera we find in people’s record collections. A weathered family photo, a crinkled love letter, math homework from 1984, a receipt for a purchase in 1967. All of these things paint a picture of the person who listened to the music before us, and we are suckers for that kind of story telling. We even started an instagram page called #thingswefindinrecords.

First visit to Siren — what should someone dig through first?

The first place any visitor - first time or otherwise- should dig through is the New Arrivals sections - there’s a New Release section and a Used New Arrivals right as you step through the front doors.
