"Esoteric and experimental across all genres" is a specific stance — most shops sort by genre and let taste come from that. Naming the shop Unchanged Mind and building around noise, rare and experimental feels deliberate. What's the story of how that identity got locked in?

There is definitely a strong curatorial stance with the shop. When I was first opening I seriously considered just putting every release in alphabetical order without regards to genre. Part of the goal is to have titles that push sonic boundaries in ever genre. I want to give everyone with an interest in music pathways to more challenging music and deeper sonic palettes.

New Hope has its own draw — the arts scene, the river, the walk down Main Street. For someone driving in from the 50-mile radius people apparently do, what should they be seeing around the shop beyond the shop itself?

I am a huge booster of what goes on in this area and I could ramble on about the other businesses I love for hours but on the short there is amazing vintage shopping on both sides of the river, John and Peters is bringing in great musical acts 7 nights a week and Soupcon Salon is supporting the diy music community. We have an incredible craft beer scene, Oddbird Brewing, Wild Fern and Doubles are all must stops for that. But what I really love about the area is being on the Delaware river. I spend as much free time as I can hanging out in, on and around the river.

What kind of person makes that drive? Reviews describe you as a destination for serious collectors — who's actually coming through, and what are they usually chasing?

I get a lot of people coming in for the rare noise and experimental stuff, that is probably the biggest unique draw. I also have a lot of DJs who come in for the dance singles. I always get a little uncomfortable overhyping who comes in but there are a lot of nationally known djs and musicians who come through fairly regularly.

In experimental and noise specifically, the whole "collectible" framing gets weird — small pressings, obscure labels, no real Discogs comps for a lot of it. How do you actually put a number on something like that when a seller brings it in?

I am incredibly deep in that scene and can generally find enough info on almost any release to be comfortable making an offer but its a challenge there's stuff in that zone that I think is really cool that just doesn't have much demand. I try to generally treat anything that comes in as worth something and worth listening to.

And the flip side of a curated experimental shop is that a lot of stuff gets turned away. When someone brings in a box hoping for the noise section and it turns out to be… not that, how do you have that conversation?

I am lucky enough to have a pretty savvy customer base. They tend to know what they have and what's fair which usually makes my job a lot easier.

What's the wildest thing that's come through the door — the record or box you didn't expect to see in New Hope?

The one that most blew my mind was a local guy who I know as an eclectic Jazz/World type musician brought in the S/T 7" By the band Turning Point which is a sXe hardcore collector grail. Did not expect someone to bring that in on a whim.

On experimental/noise pressings, sellers often either wildly under- or over-value what they've got. What's a record you're always glad to see that sellers don't know is worth something?

With that stuff a lot of it for me is about what I personally like, I am always stoked when someone brings in Hair Police, Nautical Almanac or Double Leopards records because those are acts I love who were formative to me. Even if they aren't high ticket

On trades — you'll take noise and rare records for trade. When you're valuing a trade-in against something in your own bins, how does that math actually work? What do sellers get wrong about how you think about it?

Most people value their records as if they were mint when most fall into the VG-Vg+ zone and with stuff that's handmade that gets even more complicated. The bigger thing for me is how fast something is likely to sell. A record I am selling for $30 that will sit on the shelf for 6 months is worth a lot less to me than a $15 record that's going to be out of the store in a week.
