Interview with The Vinyl Frontier

The Vinyl Frontier claims one of the largest vinyl selections in Georgia — which is a strong claim for a shop that isn't in Atlanta. What did it take to build that inventory in Carrollton specifically, and how would you describe the shop's identity to someone who's never walked in?

Getting that much inventory was certainly a challenge. When we decided to open the store we spent about a year driving all over the southeast buying up music lots of anything we could get our hands on. 2015 was a much different time as far as used record availability and pricing goes. My business partner and I also threw in our entire collections to the cause. We wanted to make sure we had a store we would want to shop at and to make that happen we needed something truly special. The Vinyl Frontier is primarily a used music store. In the last decade used vinyl has become harder and harder to find. Most other stores i go to have a small used section and primarily have new records. We've always tried to do the opposite. Our goal has always been to have the best used selection in the state.

Carrollton is a college town with a real downtown — the University of West Georgia crowd, the historic square, the drive out from Atlanta. For someone visiting the shop for the first time, what else around Alabama Street or the square is worth their time?

Carrollton has grown a lot over the past decade. We have a truly unique used bookstore a few doors down called Underground Books that is underground....literally. We've got tons of restaurants, breweries, and the typical college town stuff. We've got an outdoor amphitheatre downtown that regularly schedules bands during summer weekends. This will be a bit of a self plug but we also just added a stage in our store and will start booking bands soon for that as well. All the shows at the amp and our store are free as well.

Between the students, the West Georgia locals and the day-trippers from Atlanta, you're serving pretty different crowds. What does each side dig for, and how do you balance that in what you stock?

This is something that has changed over the past decade we've been open as well. I would say early days skewed much older for us. But the younger generation has really gotten invested especially since COVID. These days it's probably 50/50. We have over 13,000 new records and carry all the newest releases in addition to having over 20,000 used records so we really have something for everybody.

You've been direct about what you don't buy — gospel, comedy, classical, 40s/50s records. What's the honest reason for each of those, and how do you have that conversation when a seller shows up with a stack of any of them?

We are always willing to take a look at anything someone brings in. There are certain genres that we usually end up having too much of already that don't move quite as fast to warrant having additional copies. The best way we've found to handle this is by just calling ahead of time or filling out our form online and listing or taking photos of what you have. That gives us a great idea of if it's something we could take in at this time. We have a back door that opens to the parking lot and can always help carry records to or from your vehicle. We truly believe there is gold in every genre and we're always willing to take a look.

And the reverse — what quietly turns out to be worth more at The Vinyl Frontier than sellers expect? Something they'd almost leave behind that you're always glad to see?

We always love to see any metal and punk. Finding older stuff in those genres has become challenging over the years. We can never have enough.

You've mentioned you'll possibly come to sellers for large collections. What tips off a house call worth making versus one you'd rather have the seller pack up and bring in?

Usually, if a customer has more than a few crates we're always willing to come to them. Records are heavy and space in a car is limited so we always try to make it as easy as possible.

Record Store Day is a whole operation on its own — you fulfill RSD orders and special requests. What has RSD actually taught you about your Carrollton customers versus the ones who ship in from out of state?

RSD seems to get bigger and bigger every year for us. It's also challenging because you never really know what people are going to be interested in. Some items we couldn't ever order enough due to how limited they are and others locals may just not be interested in. It can certainly be a challenge.

Ships fast across state lines — that means you've got a real online side. When someone's trying to decide whether to sell you their records locally or list them on Discogs themselves, what do you think they underestimate on each side?

When selling to a shop I think people underestimate the time records may sit on a shelf before selling. When selling on Discogs I think people underestimate the patience and fees needed. We're all for someone trying to maximize the value of their collection. But depending on the size it can certainly take a while to list things individually on Discogs or eBay. The fees on those sites have also gotten ridiculous.
