I am interested in all genres, but mostly 60s, 70s, and 80s rock/pop. I prefer original releases over greatest hits collections.
Interview with Celina Music Store
Dean, you prefer original releases over greatest-hits collections and lean 60s-80s rock/pop — how did that taste for originals shape the store?
Original releases — back when thought was put into the entire package, not just a collection of songs. I listen to side A and then must follow with side B. Do you ever read your favorite chapter from a book?
You use Discogs as a price guide and offer 30-70% depending on how sellable a title is — what pushes a record toward the high end of that range?
The wear on the vinyl and on the packaging.
You mentioned a 1,000-plus record collection that took you two weeks to work through — what's the biggest or most memorable buy you've taken on?
Estate situation. Widow was overwhelmed with the size and variety in the collection. I am still working through stuff and learning about items in the collection. Everything from junk to things I've never seen before. I need to honor the deceased and be fair to his widow.
A work in progress.
Celina's a small western-Ohio lake town; who comes through for records, and how's the local scene?
A lot of creative musical talent. Lake vacationers discovering the local scene. People traveling through who have discovered the store make us a must-stop on their journey.
What's the most valuable or surprising record you've come across evaluating a collection?
Sealed original release of Primevil.
Cash or trade can change the percentage you offer — how do you walk sellers through that choice?
Offer the two amounts. Some customers pick out a few things and leave credit for future finds; others go crazy and spend money beyond their trade values.
Do you buy 45s and 78s, or mostly LPs?
Buy LPs; offer trade values on 45s and 78s.
Should sellers clean records before an evaluation, and what condition problems most affect value?
Cleaning is not necessary and will not hide the care the records have received.
FAQ
How do you determine the value of records?
I use Discogs as a price guide to determine values and then offer a percentage of that value to you.
What percentage of the Discogs value do you typically offer?
Percentage-wise, I offer between 30% and 70%, cash or trade. More sellable titles have higher values.
How long does it take you to evaluate a collection?
Smaller collections I will be able to evaluate the same day. For large collections, like the last one of 1,000-plus records, it took me 2 weeks to get through.
