Interview with Waiting Room Records

Waiting Room is on West North Street in Normal — a block that also has North Street Records and Mother Murphy's within a hundred feet. Three shops sharing that stretch is unusual. What's the origin story, and how did Waiting Room end up carving its niche on a block that competitive?

We are quite friendly with our neighbors and find the proximity better for our customers. When a customer has a request or a need that is better suited for the other, we will always recommend them. Each store has their own niches and specialties, our thing is modern, punk, metal and hip hop and cult and noir films.

Illinois State University sits right on top of Bloomington-Normal, which means students, faculty, longtime locals, and folks coming through from central Illinois all cross paths in your shop. What role does Waiting Room play across that mix, and who's actually walking through the door on a typical Saturday?

Here at Waiting Room we try to open the doors with local shows, listening parties and events that connect music with the students and the community. We believe everyone has a place in music, and attempt to navigate events for all ages to bring the community together.

When somebody walks in with a box of records to sell, what makes a collection an easy yes for you in the first thirty seconds — the tells you look for before you've even started pricing?

The first thing we look for is the outside condition, how do the record sleeves look and smell? What does the box or bag look like when it’s brought in? The outside conditions of the records are often telling of the vinyl.

You offer cash or trade value — some shops separate those aggressively, others don't. How do the two compare at the Waiting Room, and when does taking trade actually make more sense for the seller?

We give fair prices for cash. However, we give a trade value for an enticing offer.

Central Illinois has humid summers, cold winters, and a lot of collections that lived in a basement. What condition damage do you see most in Bloomington-Normal collections, and what would you tell a seller to do differently going forward?

Your records should live where you live, they should be in a climate controlled area, outside of direct sunlight, and kept upright.

What's the most overvalued type of record you see people trying to sell — the "I saw this go for a lot on eBay" collections that turn out to be worth much less than the seller expected?

We grade very conservatively, we value the quality of the record more than the title.

Opening a record shop in a college town — three shops on the same block, no less — is a specific bet. For someone thinking about a similar market, what did you learn in the first year or two that you wish someone had told you before the doors opened?

Be friendly with your neighbors, inviting to the community, find your niche, and work together.
