How did Vyntage Vinyl come to be?

Hello, sorry for the late response. We've been incredibly busy recently. We've had a few large collections come to us and we released our own record. We pressed King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard's Minneapolis Armoury show on vinyl recently, so we've been dealing with that.

During the 2010 recession, Kelly (the owner) had kidney failure and was on dialysis and needed money for basic necessities. He could no longer run his business (which he had to close), being on dialysis 5 days a week. He was trying to find stuff to sell and found his record collection. He needed money for the basics in life, so he sold his records and found it to be a good way of making a few bucks for himself.

For the next few years he would find and purchase collections, clean the records, and put them in poly sleeves in the hopes that he would be able to start a retail store down the road when the economy improved. In 2015 he opened in a very small store, in with another business. Eventually, Kelly purchased the other business and used it to help cover half the bills until the music store could sustain itself, which was 2021.

What brings people into the shop?

Most of our customers come from outside of Red Wing. A good chunk of our regulars aren't local. One of the things that I believe incentivises people to come here is that none of our used records are sold online, allowing people to find rare records here at the store.

We hand clean every used record and playtest records that need to be to ensure quality. We've also been told that the curated variety of records that we have is exceptional.

How do records fit alongside CDs, cassettes, turntables, speakers, and electronics?

Besides our large selection of new and used records, we carry a large selection of CDs and cassettes. We also carry new turntables and speakers, and new electronics to play CDs and cassettes.

Having a physical form of music allows people to interact with their music, to hear the diversity of quality between CD, vinyl, cassette, etc., and no one is going to take the physical version away from you. When you've got it, you own it. I believe the quality and ever changing large selection is what keeps people coming back.

How did the media-transfer side become part of the store?

Kelly had the equipment, so it was a service he offered (before the store) to make some money. It was quite popular so he implemented it into the store. We can transfer almost every form of video cassette, 8mm film to DVD and USB. Also digitize slides to USB.

How does the shop connect with local musicians?

We support as many local musicians as possible with a good sized local section of records. We play a fair amount of local musicians' music in the store. That definitely helps introduce people to new local music.

What's been moving well lately?

Vinyl has always been our consistent big mover. I attribute that to the sales we offer, our prices, and variety. There has been a noticeable uptick in our CD sales recently though. I believe some people genuinely love the format & the monetary barrier to entry isn't as steep as vinyl can be, generally speaking.

The genres of music we're seeing an increase in are metal, jazz & punk, which we have a large inventory of.

If someone wants to sell records, what matters most?

Quality and titles are the most important factors. Anyone can bring their collection any time we're open. If mobility or large collections is an issue, we do drive to view and purchase collections regularly.

Quality is a dominant factor in pricing for us. We are very picky with what goes in the store. Most of our regular customers don't even check the condition of our used records any more. They know they can trust our quality.

What we always look for are 60s and newer rock, jazz, punk & metal records. We purchased a very large jazz collection five years ago, so we created an entire room specifically dedicated to jazz.

First visit - what should someone dig through first?

The first stop I would recommend is the recent arrival section. That's used records we have just priced before they're alphabetized in their categories. Everything is alphabetical by first name in their category. If you're looking for anything specific, asking one of us where something is would expedite the process, but we do have generalized genre sections around the store so everything has its own section.

Second would be our new vinyl. We have a wall dedicated to the new release records for the week. We hear all the time that people are surprised that we have an album they've been looking for.

If I was going for more of a general look at records, our $5 section is loaded with amazing titles that extend into the jazz room. The current sale we have for the $5 records is 8 for $20. We do have a wall of rare and hard to find records. You'll always find rare and obscure records there.

P.S. We started our own record label this spring and we released our first pressing, which is King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard - Live At The Minneapolis Armory 2024 Bret's Picks. We pressed CDs and a double LP that's purple.
