Boulevard Trash
Record store in Tulsa, OK
Boulevard Trash in Tulsa is more than a punk and metal record shop. It is a DIY-rooted store on South Harvard that brings together vinyl, books, clothing, patches, pins, zines, accessories, and underground music culture. Founded in 2013 by owners with long punk and DIY backgrounds, Boulevard Trash has grown into a community space for Tulsa's alternative scene, supporting local bands, venues, record collectors, and people who do not always see themselves represented in ordinary retail spaces.
The shop buys used clothing, records, and accessories for cash or store credit during business hours. It is located at 1545 S Harvard Ave in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Tuesday through Thursday they are open noon to 6pm, Friday noon to 7pm, Saturday 11am to 7pm, and Sunday noon to 4pm. Closed Mondays. Interview with Boulevard Trash
Boulevard Trash mixes punk, hardcore, metal, books, clothing, and patches. What does that combination say about the scene around the shop?
I think it speaks to how vast even a niche scene can be. You can look at this shop and think its variety and selection may be limited, but it quickly becomes quite the opposite.
You're on South Harvard rather than tucked into a mall. Does that location change who walks in and what they're hunting for?
It does. Most of our scene is centered around the downtown area. Even with people coming from the suburbs of town, I think it helps make this place a must stop when you are closer to the main city. Plus, we are nestled around some amazing shops, so it makes the street perfectly walkable.
When used records come through, which punk, hardcore, metal, or rock titles fly off the shelf fastest?
It really depends. We primarily focus on punk and metal, so people tend to grab those records the quickest, but sometimes someone sells us a stack of The Cure and Echo and the Bunnymen records and they are gone in the blink of an eye.
If someone's got records plus shirts, zines, or patches, what should they mention before reaching out?
Mainly just what it is. We are always down to look at anything, but mentioning specific bands or brands helps a lot. Although even if you are unsure, we will still take a look.
What's something about Boulevard Trash that a basic store listing just can't capture?
I think the biggest thing is the community surrounding the shop. We exist to serve a group that is usually not catered to at most stores, so between our work with local venues and accessibility as a safe space in a red state, we harbour a lot of regulars. The community is what keeps this space alive, and what I think makes it stand out beyond just being a niche record store.
How did the shop end up combining records with clothing and DIY stuff in the first place?
Our owners founded this place back in 2013, originally as a venue and store. Both of them come from a punk rock background, and have been operating in DIY spaces most of their lives. So naturally, when creating a store, bridging their love of DIY music and record collecting was a no brainer.
Is there a band or local act whose stuff always gets people talking when it comes in?
Most locals we get in the shop will bring people in. The scene here is very supportive, so if they are not going directly to the artists, they support the local business.
What's changed about who shops there since you first opened the doors?
The main change is the variety of people that come in. Especially since I started managing, I have been trying to broaden our scope to anyone that falls under the alternative umbrella. That has led to a larger swath of the music scene and record collectors visiting.
Any genre or format you wish more people brought in?
All of it. Nothing specific, we always need more inventory.
What's the best piece of advice you'd give someone trying to sell you their old punk or metal collection?
The best advice is just to bring it in, and mainly, let me sort through it. I know times can be hard, but giving me a day or so to sort through the collection will be beneficial for both of us in the end.
FAQ
What does Boulevard Trash buy?
Boulevard Trash buys used records, clothing, accessories, and related DIY or alternative-scene items. They are especially connected to punk, metal, hardcore, rock, and alternative culture.
What should sellers mention before bringing items in?
It helps to mention what you have, including specific bands, brands, formats, zines, shirts, patches, or other scene-related items. If you are not sure what you have, the shop is still willing to take a look.
What used records sell fastest at Boulevard Trash?
Punk and metal are the shop's core focus and often move quickly, but strong alternative titles can also sell fast, including bands like The Cure or Echo and the Bunnymen.
Should sellers expect an immediate answer on a collection?
Not always. For larger collections, Boulevard Trash recommends bringing the records in and giving the shop time to sort through them. A day or so can help both the seller and the shop get to a fair result.
What makes the South Harvard location useful?
The store sits near other shops on a walkable street, while still being close enough to Tulsa's central scene to become a must-stop for people coming from around town.
What makes Boulevard Trash different from a basic record store listing?
The shop is built around community: local venues, DIY music, alternative culture, regulars, and a safe space for people who are not always catered to in mainstream stores.
