Interview with Block Head Records

Block Head Records — where does the name come from, and what's the shop about?

I’m a big guy and in high school my friends called me block. Said I was built like a cinder block. And then jokingly started calling me blockhead

Richmond has a deep spot in recording history — the old Gennett studios cut some of the earliest jazz here. Does that history mean anything to the shop and the town today?

I share the rich music history with any customer who will listen! Definitely an important part of our history.

If someone flipped through your bins, what would they find the most of?

Punk and metal.

When a seller sets a crate down, what tells you fast whether it's worth your time?

Condition. Smell, then artists. Lol

What's the biggest gap between what a record's worth and what people think it's worth?

That totally depends on the buyer. Some are worth more to them than others

What do people undervalue that you know will sell fast?

Jazz

How much more is store credit worth than cash here, and does anyone ever regret taking the cash?

Same value

Indiana summers are humid and a lot of records live in basements. What condition damage do you see most?

Scratches or not taken care of.

What's the most valuable record you've ever had come across the counter?

Not sure.. maybe a Guns N’ Roses sealed rape cover?

What's a moment behind the counter that sums up why you do this?

" I love seeing the smile on a customer's face when they find something that they have been looking for for a while
