Interview with Mo' Brunch + Brews

Mo' Brunch + Brews brings together a vegan kitchen, a coffee bar and a curated vinyl collection under one roof — how did music become an equal part of the concept?

Music was always meant to be part of the experience at MBB, not just background noise. The vinyl gives the space personality and creates another way for people to connect.

You opened on Juneteenth 2021, and the vinyl leans into soul and its neighboring genres, curated by Flash Gordon Parks — how did that soul-forward selection come to define the room's sound?

Soul connects generations and genres—from jazz and gospel to funk and hip-hop. I wanted MBB’s sound to honor that history while still feeling fresh and alive.

Houston's got a rich, distinct music culture — who comes through Mo', and how does the space fit into the local scene?

MBB brings together DJs, musicians, artists, collectors, families and music lovers. It reflects Houston by creating a space where food, music and culture naturally overlap.

When the room's full over brunch and there's a record on, what tends to be spinning — is there a Mo' sound?

There’s definitely an MBB sound. You might hear Donny Hathaway, Roy Ayers or Minnie Riperton alongside something more obscure, but the common thread is always soul and feeling.

Food, coffee and soul records all reward taking your time — how do you use vinyl to shape the mood across a day?

I use the music to create an arc. The day might start warm and laid-back, then gradually become more energetic as the room fills up.

For someone coming in for the food who's never really sat with soul on vinyl, what would you want them to hear first?

I’d start with something like Sade, Bubbha Thomas, Robert Glasperthen play something unexpected. I want people to hear a record and ask, “Who is this?”

Soul records have a deep collector world — what do people most often misjudge about what those records are worth?

People often think old means valuable. Rarity, condition, pressing and demand matter, but I’m just as interested in a record’s cultural value and the story behind it.

What's a record or a moment at Mo' that best captures what you're building?

It’s when someone hears a record, walks over to see what’s playing, and a conversation starts. That’s what MBB is about—using music to connect people and generations.
