Woodbridge brings together a lot of cultures and commuter communities. How does that show up in what people collect?

I think what people collect is based on what they have been and are currently being exposed to, which can be both cultural and communal based. I think social media can be a big driver for this. Influencers dedicated to particular genres often talk about specific artists, which then triggers people looking for those artists on physical media.

How do records sit alongside the rest of the collectibles in the shop?

The store is primarily a record store, with a specialization in Japanese Artists and Japanese Pressings of other genres. Our second biggest driver is retro video games, but those are primarily Japanese imports. We also have a growing World Music section and plan to expand our International selections.

Do people come in looking for music, or discover the records while browsing everything else?

I would say the majority of customers come in looking for music. But since the record store is in the same space as the Filipino Grocery Store (Pinay Grocery) and next to our Filipino Restaurant (Pinay Kitchen), sometimes customers of those stores will discover the record shop and luckily we have managed to keep a small OPM (Original Filipino Music) section for them to browse.

Are there genres, languages, or regional scenes your customers respond to especially well?

In the Japanese department, definitely the Jazz Fusion and City Pop genres. For everything else, R&B/Soul and various sub-genres of Rock.

Being close to DC but firmly in Woodbridge, what does that do to the store's audience?

For the Japanese music and Japanese Pressings, people do travel to get to us. Otherwise we have a really solid local client base. We see regulars weekly.

What's an item or record that surprised you by finding its perfect buyer?

One of the things we specialize in is finding rare records for people through our contacts in Japan. Getting a customer a record they haven't been able to find is probably one of the best parts of running the store.

Recently a customer was asking for a Filipino female artist on CD that was difficult for him to find at a reasonable price. We found it for him for a really good price and he was very happy.

From a brick-and-mortar perspective, what matters most for making the store work?

I can only speak to a brick and mortar store environment since we are not yet selling online. With that said, have a lot of inventory/selection!

Does condition work differently for records than for the other collectibles you handle?

Absolutely, in fact we are very particular about condition when we put our records on the floor. We vacuum and ultrasonically clean all the records and then we grade and price. If a record is VG condition or below, we list it on the record and obviously those are priced lower.

The records we import from Japan are typically in fantastic condition. For the retro video games, they are very easy to clean and test. Only the consoles can be difficult to clean and fix. Our employee Marci has nightmares about working on PSPs.
