Interview with Daystar Records

Daystar opened as a community-focused, all-ages shop with an unusually wide map — jazz and rock, but also Caribbean, African, Latin American and Pacific Island records. How did you decide to cast the net that wide?

We’re an all-genre record store, and we celebrate the full spectrum of musics that people enjoy. For us it’s all about the joy and connection and fun and depth of experience that happen with music and vinyl records, so we’re open to all musical genres and the relationships between different types of music.

You've built a cross-generational section specifically for parents sharing music with their kids — where did that idea come from?

We’re parents, and we see how various types of music can be great for adults and kids to experience together. There are songs by Little Wings, for example, that are wonderful for kids to enjoy with their parents. A lot of people who come in the store might not immediately associate Little Wings or Aretha Franklin or Paul Simon with children’s music, so we open the door for that association to happen.

Burbank sits in one of the densest record markets on earth — who's coming through Daystar, and how do you carve out your own corner of the LA scene?

Our customers are everybody. We’re an open, welcoming store that cares about music and the great effort and love that go into making records. We care about the context and human connection surrounding every album that gets made. We’re artists and musicians and record label owners ourselves, so we serve the community in part from that perspective. People experience life through a musical lens, and that’s the world we’re a part of. For us it’s not so much about carving out a space as it is about being a part of the energies and human connections that flow from music. Every record is like a prism, and we enjoy helping people see the world through records.
