Full Haus bills itself as "Connecticut's DJ vinyl shop," built around house and dance music — how did you and Kiki decide Norwalk needed a home base for DJs and dance collectors?

There aren't many if any DJ focused shops around us, despite the local scene flourishing with many DJs/Producers and parties, this area was missing something. Dylan lives in Norwalk and I was living in Stamford when we had this idea. Norwalk was a perfect fit for building a community. The scene was already here, we're proud to have built something outside of a club/bar to express ourselves and share music with the community and now the world.

You run it as a concept brand as much as a store, with listening parties and community programs — how does that events side feed the shop?

The events are another expression of our creativity, we enjoy listening and sharing music and that's exactly what these events do. People are yearning for socialization outside the normal standards, having a place where people can gather and express one another is very important especially now as these sacred spaces are far and few.

Fairfield County isn't the first place people picture for a dance-vinyl shop — who comes through Full Haus, and how's the local scene?

Being less than an hour outside NYC, we're still directly connected with the scene, we've both established relationships through our years seeing music and playing out, which lends to broaden our network. Many local and foreign artists have stopped by, word of mouth has always played a large role in our exposure as we don't have a huge social media presence.

What's the most valuable or surprising record that's come through the door?

We've had a bunch of cool things come through, some rare, others obscure, anything from Taiwanese bootlegs, a few sealed UHQR, Artaud - Pescado Rabioso, autographed LPs. We don't post all of our rare or pricey items online so you'll have to stop in to discover what else we've got hiding in plain sight.

You buy and sell, mixing curated second-hand with new releases from smaller labels — when a collection comes in, what are you looking for?

We look for just about everything, when buying collections, there are different approaches for each collection. At times we'll buy just for certain people, like regulars who come in weekly, other times it's the best sellers, but we're always looking for new stuff we've never heard of.

Most importantly we're always looking for good quality. Great music always comes through the door, but unfortunately when the music isn't in the best playable condition we have to pass as we've got a standard to uphold and quality is always prioritized first and foremost, there are always exceptions but we are always looking for new music, we buy collections weekly.

House and dance music live on the 12-inch single — is that where the heart of your buying is, and where the value sits?

I'd say maybe 50/50 it's definitely where our passion sits, but given our unique locations we have a large variance of customers to appeal to.

Should sellers clean records before bringing them, and what condition problems hurt value most for dance records that have seen real DJ use?

100% we wish every collection came cleaned, you'll definitely get a better price if the collection has been cleaned prior. We clean all collections we get and this process is long and cost us time and money so we always take that in account.

What do people most often overvalue about their records — and what quietly sells better than they'd guess?

A lot of people have a personal connection to their collection/music, so it's important to always be polite no matter what we're looking at, if they don't agree with my offer I usually explain how I came up with that number and explain to them the process, inspection of every record/ultrasonic cleaning/resleeving. I never want to offend someone, but that does happen from time to time when someone expects me to pay $1000+ for a collection that is not only dirty, but scratched up and not up to the selling standards.

Even if I don't buy a collection I always educate them on the process and how much additional work goes in before I can even sell their LPs. I'm surprised what sells better, it can change with the weather.
