Interview with Crescent Moon Music & Collectibles
Crescent Moon is a multi-vendor consignment space with a records section in back — how did vinyl become part of that mix?
We started Crescent Moon with my parents’ collection of about 900 classic rock records. My mom worked at Sound Warehouse and Record Peddler in the early 80’s and always dreamed of owning her own store. In 2021, we decided to combine our passions for music and vintage.

With collectibles, vintage clothing and jewelry all under one roof, how does the record section fit into the whole?
Our main selling point is variety and uniqueness. We like to say that we have something for everyone here. The record store is definitely a destination for music lovers.

Because vendors consign their own collections, does the vinyl selection shift a lot depending on who's stocking it?
We are solely in charge of stocking the records at Crescent Moon. Vendors stock a variety of other physical media like cassettes, CDs, DVDs, and VHS tapes.

San Antonio has a deep, distinctive music culture; who comes through, and what turns up in the bins here that wouldn't elsewhere?
We carry a lot of old Joe Anthony “San Antonio bands” like Riot, Molly Hatchet, and Judas Priest. Our record store manager is always looking for new artists to stock, and takes great care to be inclusive to fans of all genres and artists. Stocking newer artists like Bladee and Jane Remover that other record stores may not carry is a reason to visit Crescent Moon!
What's the most valuable or surprising record that's come through the shop?
We had an original copy of Beck’s Midnight Vultures and a vinyl-only Carl Cox compilation, both from the same collection.

Can someone sell or consign records to you, and how does that work?
Although we don’t do consignment, all someone has to do is come in, call, DM, or email about selling records. Then we will set up an appointment time in which the record store manager will give them a quote on how long it will take to inventory, price, and clean based on the amount of records they’re selling. After this, the record store manager will give you a quote on how much they would pay for your collection/records.
Roughly what does a common record fetch versus something special?
Affordable pricing is something we strive for in our record store. Pressing, condition, and marketability factor into how much we can give you for a record. For example a common press of a 70s rock record can generally fetch 5-10 while rare pressings or particularly marketable records can get you anywhere from 15-40 dollars.

Do you carry 45s and 78s, or mostly LPs?
LPs are our bread and butter, but we do have a small selection of 45s and 78s.
Should sellers clean records before bringing them, and what condition problems hurt value most?
We appreciate any cleaning beforehand; however, cleaning and testing are always part of our purchasing process. We notice collections stored in garages or sheds tend to have the most condition issues with covers and skipping.
What should a first-time visitor know before digging through the record section?
We’re a small, independent shop and stocking what customers want is very important to us! We’re always open to requests and suggestions for titles to carry.
