What made horror, punk, and metal the focus for Vyle Vinyl?

I just wanted to stick with what I know, I grew up in the Southern California Punk scene, That Kinda crossed over to a Metal scene, then ended in Goth. So I moved through all of these scenes, and its music that makes these and most scenes.

What role has Vyle Vinyl carved out in Orlando's record scene?

From our first pop-up event over 3 years ago, we always stressed that we were not your typical record seller. That Orlando had a niche to fill and we were up for the challenge. We cater to the darker side of record collecting. Extreme Metal, Goth, Underground Horror, Hardcore, and a lot of other smaller genres. Our typical customers are the same people you would see at a Punk Rock Fleamarket, an Oddities & Curiosities show, Goth Market, and other events with an edge to them.

What makes a punk, metal, or horror collection an easy yes?

Condition and Completeness. Of course you want the records to be in the best possible condition, but I also look for collections with a lot of the same records from the same bands, especially complete runs A bought a collection a few weeks ago that had 15 Cannibal Corpse records. If someone loses a band enough to have 15 records from the same band, not only do they love the band, but they love the records from these bands, and in most cases they will be in excellent shape. A collection with just a bunch of random bands, perhaps a lot of the bought on a whim, may not receive the care that a full run does.

What gets overvalued in horror and metal collecting?

The Horror soundtrack market is controlled by a couple big players. WaxWork and Enjoy The RIde. They just keep putting out the same repackaged products. Halloween with new art? Friday the 13th with a foil cover? Blood Splatter Pressings? The prices on these stay high because they start high. For a small shop like mine, I have to buy them from their website at retail just to have them in stock, then I have to raise the price to have some room for profit.

What Florida storage problems hurt records most?

Store your records standing up. Storing records flat in a pile is not good in our environment. I see a lot of ‘bowl warp’ from records that have been stored flat. It’s not just the heat. We buy lots of records that have been in garages for years, but as long they are packed tightly standing up in a box, they usually play down.

How do you price a mixed collection with a seller?

First thing I do is separate the records by value. I make a stack of everything that I think I can sell for $5 or more, and a stack of ‘dollar records’. Then I split the good stack again between $5-$10 records and more valuable records. Lately the main determine factor of deciding what to buy has to do with the potential audience. There were a lot of great records that came out in the 40s and 50s, but they have lost all value since most of the audience for these records have passed on. Classical, Big Band, Swing, 78’s, I usually pass on these.

What have pop-ups and record shows done for the store?

The number one question we got during our time when we were strictly doing pop-ups was ‘do you have a store?’. It seemed like the logical next step. Every pop-up sale includes a flyer for the shop, and every shop sale includes a flyer with a calendar of our upcoming pop-up events. We got a lot of people in the shop that tell us they saw us and so and so event.

What should someone know before opening a niche-focused record shop?

Have something for everyone. Alrhough we mainly focus on punk, metal and horror you want to have a good variety. We see a lot if older ‘metal heads’ that come in with there kids. The kids usually have no interest in 80s hair metal, but I also have a great hip-hop section. I don’t know a lot about J.Cole, but I sell the hell out of his records. We even have an ‘80s for $8’ section that we jokingly refer to as ‘The Mom Crate’.
