Rewind Records in Bloomington grew from a local label and recording studio into a record shop after a visit to the Switchyard Music Expo. In this interview, Wayne discusses supporting local bands, stock from the classics to Nirvana, and the records that remain personal favorites.
Interview with Rewind Records
Wayne, Rewind Records sits inside Fountain Square Mall, right off Kirkwood. How did the shop start, and what's it about?
Rewind Records has been around since 2011 as a local label and recording studio. We closed for Covid and then started back up screenprinting merch for local bands in the Secretly warehouse until we saw a spot open up in the FSM. I actually didn't have the idea to make it a record store until we were invited to the Switchyard Music Expo. I was inspired so we just went for it. We've been slowly building up our inventory ever since and now have a pretty good selection!
Bloomington's an IU town with a real music streak. What role does the shop play locally, and who's coming through — students, longtime locals?
I've been involved with the local music scene a long time and want to continue supporting local bands by selling their CDs and Vinyl here which is something we'll be expanding a lot. We're getting a good mix of locals and college students.
What's in the bins — the formats and genres you're strongest on?
We're focusing on the classics. Currently have about 3 thousand CDs and 25 hundred vinyl in stock, mostly pre-2000. Just started ordering new vinyl and will be keeping the classics in-stock from the Beatles to Nirvana.
When a seller sets a crate down, what tells you fast whether it's worth your time?
If it looks like what you find at Goodwill then it's a giveaway that its more trouble to deal with than it's worth. But I almost always make an offer and donate what's not sellable.
What do people overestimate the most when they bring it in?
In general, popular artists that might sell fast but aren't particularly valuable because so many were made.
What's the unglamorous record that always finds a buyer?
Nevermind always goes quick. I guess you could say it's anti-glam.
What's the honest math on cash versus credit here — when is credit genuinely the better deal for the seller?
You'll get around 20-30% more value in credit.
Indiana summers are humid and a lot of records come out of a basement. What condition damage do you see most?
What I see the most is that the best records have the most needle damage because they've been played so much!
What's the strangest collection someone's ever brought in?
I got a whole batch of Elvis records once, which isn't that strange but I was really happy to get them. I just sold one that was a lecture about Halloween from the 70s which was pretty interesting.
If someone could take home just one record from your shop, what would you want it to be?
An original pressing of OK Computer. It's one of my favorite records of all time. And its $300.
