Interview with S.A.G.E. Collective
What did “collective” mean at S.A.G.E.?
S.A.G.E. Collective is actually made up of our family names. Samantha (the matriarch), Andrew (the son), Georgia (the daughter) and Eric (the Dad). Collective to us, was the 4 of us coming together collectively to bring what we all love to the business. It's Music, Vintage, Crafts, and more. A little bit of each of us.
What do you love about Marina?
While we don't have the shop anymore, we are Marina Residents and have a deep love for our community. Marina was once a booming Military Community and many of the retirees are still here from that time. The City is growing like crazy and plenty of new shops in the Dunes area, and still a lot of great mom-and-pop businesses up and down Del Monte and Reservation. It's a tight-knit community with plenty of beautiful parks, good food, and good people. Papa Chevos is a must for the best Asada Fries around.
Who came to the shop?
The shop, during its time, had a lot of local clients. We hosted Open Mic nights weekly that brought out a variety of folks from High School kids, professional musicians, and just general music lovers. While Marina itself hasn't typically been a tourist destination, it tends to be more affordable than Monterey to stay while on the coast. Plenty of tourists stopped in as well.
What genres did you focus on?
We tend to lean in towards what we know best. 80's, Reggae, and Country. We don't necessarily stay away from any genres; we just have to have the right price or do some research before looking outside of that. We have acquired quite a bit of Jazz and Classical over the years as well.
What made the bargain bin special?
That's a tough one. We do have quite a collection of "bargain" vinyl. The $1, $2, and $3 records are a real draw for folks trying to find a treasure or hear something new without spending too much. It provides more of a tangible value than monetary.
How did you handle cash, credit, and trades?
Cash is king of course. We prefer to not do consignment or store credit. We will work with a trade, but keeping track of someone elses property for consignment and how much credit they have, isn't much fun.
What was the most memorable collection you found?
The wildest and greatest collection we've come across was from a gentleman that passed away unfortunately. His Niece inherited his collection and was looking to part ways with it. The guy used to work for Nickelodeon and had a diverse genre palette. Everything from obscure soundtracks from around the world to ultra-rare punk rock records and everything in between. That reminds me...Soundtracks are always surprising. I never thought there would be such a big market for them.
Where should visitors find local music?
Our son is the vocalist for a local band called Rosewood. They play a lot out at a place called 6th Ave behind CSUMB. If the vibe is right, I also recommend checking out the shows at 6th Ave. They are very welcoming to new artists and music lovers. There is also a group called Tribe in the Sky that meets weekly around the peninsula. They are a great welcoming group of local musicians who host open mics at various places. They post each week where they will be on social media. They welcomed Rosewood in at an early stage and gave them a safe place to play and practice. Tribe in the Sky is usually on Tuesday evenings and for sure a great time!
