Interview with FM

FM has been a Denver fixture for nearly twenty years — a lifestyle boutique with a hi-fi lounge and a record shop sharing the space. How did music and vinyl become such a core part of what FM is?

Music has always played a critical role in my life and being 52 years old, I grew up buying all my favorite songs and albums on vinyl. I worked in a local record store in college and when I found my way to the art of DJing in my forties, I chose vinyl as the medium. The impetus behind FM has always been, how do I stay near the things I love for a living, and so hosting DJs and my friend's record store was just me continuing that tradition. We introduced Seth Nichol’s Love Vinyl Records annex to the shop in 2020.

The vinyl side leans into electronic and DJ styles — house, techno, ambient — and you host DJ sets and events in the lounge. How does that sound define the room?

Truth be told, that’s still being defined a bit. When we host popup markets and record fairs in the lounge, I lean towards tasteful selectors that have the skills to navigate a shopping and mid to uptempo environment but the space has another side to it. I’m obsessed with low slung vibes that get fed by labels like Leng, Claremont 56 and The Magic Movement. A lot of the programming we’re working on is at this pace - slow, warm vibes that are a break from what a lot of gathering spaces are playing.

South Broadway is one of Denver's most creative corridors — who comes through FM, and how does the shop fit into that scene?

South Broadway is definitely the creative corridor of Denver. Our neighborhood hosts a nice balance of venues, restaurants, records stores and indie shopping spots. People looking for the local flavor of Denver and who have an interest in supporting local business are our bread and butter. We’ve been down here a long time but there was a defined temperature on the street before we got here. We’re just carrying the torch of all the great businesses before us.

When there's a set going in the hi-fi lounge, what tends to be spinning — is there an FM sound?

We’re not a venue per se so most of the music revolves around specific programming but you’re likely to hear a fair amount of disco and other vibey tracks.

Fashion and vinyl both reward the person who cares about the details — do you see the same kind of customer geeking out over both?

There are definitely those customers that shop both the clothing and the records but there’s more of a divide than I would have thought there would be. But at the end of the day, all of our customers tend to appreciate this weird niche we’ve carved out of unique finds, whatever it is they’re shopping for.

For someone who wanders in for the clothes and stumbles onto the record shop, what would you want them to discover?

Seth from LVR, does an awesome job at carrying hard to find or small production releases. I want the customer to understand that this isn’t another shop that threw some record bins out for the optics. Love Vinyl Records selection is quite special. There’s a more than decent selection of used house and techno singles floating down below the new bins.

Electronic and DJ records live on the 12-inch — for a curious newcomer, what makes that format and that music worth diving into?

It’s the format that defined a lot of people’s relationship with music. One album. One song. It’s about appreciating something deeply and intentionally. Maybe it’s the version you pull out at a dinner event when you want to bring more ritual to the listening experience. Or better yet, maybe it’s that single you bought that started your DJ career.

What's a record or a night at FM that best captures what the place is about?

That’s a hard one to answer since the space is so new and so much of the programming is yet to come. Just know that I love dance music but I’ve also slowed down a bit. This space is all about that.
