Interview with Del Rio Records La habra
How did Del Rio Records La Habra begin?
I’m originally from La Habra and I was raised in La Habra. My family and I currently live out in the Inland Empire. So my roots are in this area and I’m big into the car culture and what that means for Whittier Blvd. My good friend owns the private art studio upstairs called threestudios. I was there one night and saw the space was for rent and our son had just got his barbers license so I thought of it for a cool space he could cut up our family members in the area and I have been collecting vinyl and antiques and cool stuff for a while and decided to rent the space. My cousin Moy owns the Del Rio Records in San Luis Colorado MX so we decided to open up this one here in the US.
What sets Del Rio apart in the LA/OC record scene?
Those shops are some of my favorite places. Our spot is on the smaller scale but we have a stage where we have live performances and a place where all types of music can be enjoyed. We have a cool parking lot area to do show cars at and the complex was empty and dead for so long so we are bringing some life back into it for the community. We started off with one small room but after our neighbors moved out, we now have 5 rooms. We have 2 music rooms with vinyl, cds, cassette tapes and music memorabilia. We also have a room of antiques and collectibles (retro toys, sports memorabilia, everything to take you back to your childhood) and then the icing on the cake is we have a vhs horror room with over 3000 vhs with super rare horror vhs, laserdiscs, movie soundtracks and all horror props and horror collectibles for sale.
What makes a collection worth buying?
We analyze what we can sell and what is a dollar bin vinyl (we have a huge section of dollar records for the true diggers) and what should be donated to the goodwill. We generally price our records on the lower side based on the condition of the vinyl and cover.
How central are Latin soul and Mexican records to the shop?
We carry all genres of music and they are all divided by genre. We also have a lot of rare records and a huge section of rare Latin soul and Mexican records more than I see in other shops. However we have customers that just come in regularly for what they are into
What heat damage do you see most often?
The sun is a killer to vinyl and during hot months you can't even leave a vinyl in the car for 5 mins. We have curtains on our windows and a sun screen outside we put down to shade the sun coming into the shop.
How do you explain a fair offer?
We are honest with the seller on the types of records, the condition of the records and if we have a buyer to sell them to, I feel we are pretty fair at buying.
What do sellers most often overvalue?
Haven’t really ran into this too much but we do have sellers that try to sell to us at high Discogs or eBay prices and we explain we can buy those cause we can’t make a profit or we potentially lose money on the buy. But if it’s something we really like if the price is right we can work something out
What have you learned from opening a shop in LA/OC?
Customer service goes a long way that’s what I will say. Some of our customers we met have became some of our closest friends now. Greeting people, having conversations and being personable even if you're busy goes a long way. Be open to all music, we like to have a variety. It’s really cool to meet people and we have customers of all ages, we love to see the younger generations getting into physical media and having the older generations talk about their collections. We just have so many different items in the store there is something for everyone.
